Chinese experts will participate in the restoration of France's Notre-Dame cathedral, state media reported on Wednesday, following a meeting between the two countries' heads of state in Beijing.

The 850-year-old cathedral, which was scarred in April after a fire tore through its roof and toppled its spire, was the most visited historic monument in Europe.

Since the blaze, which took 400 firefighters to control, Chinese and French authorities have been in touch about cooperating on restoration efforts, reported official news agency Xinhua.  ...

 Citing a document signed by the two countries during President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Beijing, Xinhua said Chinese experts will work with French teams in on-site restoration without elaborating.

"China and France will collaborate on the theme and model and select Chinese expert candidates for the cooperative restoration work in 2020," it said. ...

The famed Gothic cathedral was severely damaged by fire in 2019.  Those parts of the building that were damaged by fire will be restored to their former condition, but under the new plans some areas that were less affected by the disaster will be dramatically changed.

A global wave of emotion saw 340,000 donors contribute €833m to restoring the iconic edifice.  €165m has already been spent on securing the cathedral, which was structurally damaged during the fire.  The €262,6m left will go towards phase one of restoration work.

Under the proposed changes, confessional boxes, altars and classical sculptures will be replaced with modern murals, and sound and light effects to create “emotional spaces”.  Critics are aghast at plans for 'Christianity for dumbies' trail, Mandarin on walls and an eco-chapel.

There will be themed chapels on a "discovery trail", with an emphasis on Africa and Asia, and quotes from the Bible will be projected onto chapel walls in various languages.

“It’s as if Disney were entering Notre-Dame," said Maurice Culot, a prize-winning Paris-based architect, urbanist, theorist and critic who has seen the plans.  "What they are proposing to do to Notre-Dame would never be done to Westminster Abbey or Saint Peter’s in Rome."

A senior source close to the renovation said the plans risked turning the global beacon of Christianity into an “experimental showroom”.

The Notre Dame, which was burned down in a mysterious fire in 2019 is being rebuilt as a “woke theme park.”

Instead of rebuilding the historical cathedral as a religious monument, the reconstruction of Notre Dame will be revamped with a “discovery trail” that will lead visitors through 14 themed chapels of varying woke quantities dedicated to social justice, designed to be accessible for non-Catholics.

There's a lot of truth to that.  The homes of several neighborhoods were built with Chinese drywall; it molded, made people sick and tarnished jewelery, etc.Tit was unhealthy for people to live in these house and they had to vacate their homes.  After a massive lawsuit, people finally recouped some money so that they could rebuild.  Using Chinese drywall is no longer legal around here.

 I do wonder whether Chinese involvement (read, financing) is behind the push to change Notre Dame into a non-Christian site.

So, basically, Notre Dame will no longer be Notre Dame.  So it will have been permanently destroyed.  What a shame.

Decades ago, I thought that big, fancy church buildings like that were a waste of resources.
Later, I came to realize that such cathedrals
are a testimony to future generations of what those people valued.
