Mark Harmon Bids Farewell To ‘NCIS’ After 18+ Seasons

Fans of the CBS show “NCIS” are in shock today after it was revealed that star Mark Harmon, 70, left the show after 18 years of playing the character Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Harmon Leaves ‘NCIS’
The Hollywood Reporter reported that rumors had been swirling that Harmon was planning to exit the show ever since June, when he signed a deal to return for the show’s 19th season only in a limited capacity.

Last night’s episode, which was the fourth of season 19, ended with Gibbs deciding not to return to his job in NCIS after he was nearly killed in a boat explosion in the season 18 finale.

“I’m not going back, Tim,” Gibbs told Special Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) in the episode. “I’m not going back home.”

I don't know how much shock there is in this news. "Gibbs" was written into a corner many episodes ago, with the paths out being contrary to the character's character. The most recent few episodes have been foreshadowing even more plainly. 18-19 years is a somewhat amazing run by Hollyweird norms. NCIS has done a few token PC episodes, but unless the writers and producers are more resistant than I expect them to be, it'll probably veer farther into PCism-Land.

I must say other than Gary Cole part in it and the contrived "arrest plot" it was one of the best I've watched when a cast member exits.

I quit watching after an episode about Islamo-fascist bombings. One of the main characters state during the episode that Muslims like to set off a lot of terrorist bombs. Harmon's character Gibbs replied that Christians bomb a lot of abortion clinics.
That was it for me.
