(Bloomberg) -- Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc’s North America unit beat General Electric Co. and incumbent Pratt & Whitney to provide upgraded engines for the Air Force’s aging B-52 bomber in an award that could grow to $2.6 billion, the Pentagon announced Friday.

The deal could grow to $2.6 billion if all options are exercised. The Air Force wants to keep the B-52 in service until about 2050. The engine replacement is part of an upgrade program estimated at $11 billion that includes new flight systems, cockpit throttles and cockpit displays.

You may not believe it,but besides the incredible amount of noise one of these thinks makes when taking off fully-loaded and under full military power, damned if the wings don't flap up and down as it hits bumps. Flat freaked me out until I recalled a golden rule that states,"That which doesn't bend, breaks".

Unless you’re prepared for it, the sight of seriously wrinkled skin on the sides of the forward fuselage can be alarming, but this is not the result of abuse. The wrinkling is due mostly to wing bending and largely disappears as the wings arch upward during flight. Such aeroelasticity enables each wing tip to move through a 32-foot arc, 16 feet up and 16 feet down—an interesting sight in heavy turbulence.

I'm a lifelong civilian so the military people here can certainly correct me, but IMHO the "BUFF" and Ma Deuce must be the most robust, long-lived weapons systems in history.

I don't know whether any one person can be credited primarily with the B-52; if so, that person and John Moses Browning deserve some kind of plaque in the Pentagon.

Gotta throw the C130 in there as well - 67 years and still flying.

Agree... I never heard of a single person credited with the b-52 design, just Boeing...

That's true of commercial jets too.
