SAN DIEGO (AP) — The youngest son of U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy spoke Friday in favor of paroling his father’s assassin at a hearing in which prosecutors declined to attend to argue he should be kept behind bars.

Douglas Kennedy, who was a toddler when his father was gunned down in 1968, said he was moved to tears by Sirhan Sirhan’s remorse and should be released if he’s found to not be a threat to others.

“I’m overwhelmed just by being able to view Mr. Sirhan face to face,” he said. “I think I’ve lived my life both in fear of him and his name in one way or another. And I am grateful today to see him as a human being worthy of compassion and love.”

Sirhan, who was in a blue prison uniform with a paper towel folded like a handkerchief and tucked into his pocket, smiled as Kennedy spoke.

Sirhan Sirhan, 77, told members of the California Parole Board at this 16th bid for freedom that he had learned to control his anger and was committed to living peacefully.

The plea by two of RFK’s sons to release Sirhan Sirhan should count for nothing. RFK’s assassination was a crime against the people of California and America, not just against the Kennedy family. Justice and the safety of potential future victims aren’t theirs to give away.

About time.  The State of California hasn't been able to legitimately justify refusing parole for over 20 years now.  Their own laws say he should have been paroled long ago.  He only remained in prison because he shot a Kennedy.

Yeah actually the laws Californians have voted for repeatedly say the cockroach should have met his can of RAID decades ago. Don't confuse the democrats bastardization of California's laws with the actual laws, the death penalty Californians have consistently voted for.

You left out a few details. The governor who commuted his and other murderers sentences was Ronald Reagan. Reagan did this for two reasons: 1. the CA supreme court had ruled that the way in which death penalty sentencing was done was unconstitutional; 2. the State of California didn't have the $$ in the budget to do penalty trials for scores (hundreds?) of murderers.

CA's death penalty was rewritten after that court decision, and CA voters have twice voted down ballot propositions to end the death penalty. How unfruitloopy of us.

IOW, the only fruitloopy part of this case was Sirhan being granted parole. He should never have drawn another breath in freedom, IMO.

I'm a bit fuzzy on my recollections but didn't we boot Rose Bird over that Ca Supreme Court malarkey?

I was fuzzy on timing too, but looking at W'pedia, Bird was appointed Chief Justice several years later, in 1977, by Moonbeam 1.0. She was notorious, though, for finding the most ridiculous pretexts for overturning death sentences handed out under CA's new death penalty law and process. She was removed by CA voters in 1986, along with one or two Associate Justices.

Going forward from the point that Sirhan's sentence was commuted to life in prison, he absolutely positively should have been granted parole - not on merit, but on what the law actually says.  He has gone before the parole board over a dozen times and has satisfied every parole qualification they had.  Yet they did not grant his parole.   And why?  Because he killed a Kennedy.  In other words, his equal protection was violated because of who he killed rather than by what he did.  Other murder convicts have spent far less time behind bars before being paroled that did Sirhan.

When a parole board resorts to making up lies in order to keep someone behind bars, then tyranny has taken over.  Regardless of Sirhan's crimes, I will not stand in support of tyranny to see him remain behind bars.  California made the law.  They should abide by it.
