Biden tightening car standards to expand EVs
« on: August 06, 2021, 12:14:59 am »
Houston Chronicle by James Osborne 8/5/2021

The Biden administration announced Thursday it was developing tougher new car emission standards with the goal of making half of new passenger vehicle sales zero emissions by 2030.

The move comes as President Joe Biden seeks to get the United States on track to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid century, for which getting gasoline and diesel powered vehicles off the road is considered a critical step. And with China and other countries racing to build their electric vehicle industries, Biden described the technology as critical to the future of the U.S. economy.

"It's all electric. theres no turning back, its a question whether we will lead or fall behind," he said at a ceremony at the White House Thursday. "To unlock our full potential we need to keep investing in our workers and our manufacturing capacity."

To accelerate that pace in the United States, the Biden administration is in the process of reinstating Obama-era regulations requiring vehicles to get more than 50 miles per gallon by 2025 - which had been rolled back by former president Donald Trump - and then creating even tougher pollution standards to force automakers to produce electric vehicles.

Have they developed a battery to power an electric fire engine that will respond and sit and keep water going to a five alarm structural fire for hours?

Next time the usual suspects have an "mostly peaceful" hissy-fit, how well would that work?

President dufus might want to back off his dogma before his Karma runs over it.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

It is a hybrid.  Normally all electric with an fuel engine for extended time use.

Interesting. Pierce is a well known name in fire apparatus. But I really don't see it catching on.

I see many larger cities mandating the use for political only reasons.

If you meant catching on fire, there are plenty of examples of EVs doing that.

That's really cool! They invented an electric vehicle with the built in ability to put it's own battery fires out.

That is so nice, isn't it?

And to make it reliable to use, has a backup gasoline/diesel fuel engine

I suppose there will be some of that, but I'd like to see what the people who will depend on that equipment, at times with their own lives at stake think.

As a former firefighter, I'd be really skeptical, and as our Department was fairly rural, I'd be even more so. But in fairness, I recognize that isn't a field/brush/marsh/woods firefighting vehicle so much as an urban one, where backup is just a station away, and not miles out.
