Senate reaches deal to vote on Jan. 6 commission and get out of town
By Alexander Bolton - 05/28/21 11:31 AM EDT

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and a group of Republican conservatives have struck a deal to allow a Friday vote on a bill setting up a bipartisan Jan. 6 commission, which will let senators leave Washington for the Memorial Day recess early Friday afternoon.

The deal, which was approved by the entire Senate after being hotlined, will postpone the final procedural votes and the final up-or-down vote on a bill to improve U.S. competitiveness with China until next month.

But it means that Republicans won’t be able to delay consideration of the China bill into the holiday weekend, which may have forced Democrats to vote on the Jan. 6 commission bill in the middle of the night, when few people would be paying attention.

“It’s something we proposed. It assures a vote on the Jan. 6 commission in the next hour, it assures it occurs in the light of day, not at 3 a.m. in the morning,” Schumer announced on the Senate floor.

“It assures that the vote on the U.S. Competition Act will take place when we return in June,” he added, referring to the U.S.-China competitiveness bill.

The deal ensures that lawmakers who had scheduled overseas trips and other business will not have to rearrange their schedules.

The headline does not match the contents of the article, which is about a China Bill.  Typical Hill reportage.

@Cyber Liberty

Commission Bill was voted down today by 35-54 vote.

This does not fit on this thread, but just now is news Russian hackers have compromised the email system used by one of our State Department Agencies.  They sent emails as though it was that department emails.  That is all I have heard so far.

54 votes against?  Looks like there were some missing votes...35 + 54 = 89.  Was that the Cloture vote?

You are right, that doesn't add up.  I put those numbers on here quickly, not thinking about that, but the numbers were right there.  Hmm, did some abstain?  Later today we will know what happened.

Senate Republicans slam brakes on bill to create commission probing Capitol riot

Senate Republicans on Friday halted an effort to form a bipartisan Jan. 6 commission to investigate the Capitol attack, marking the first successful legislative filibuster mounted by the GOP minority.

The legislation needed 60 votes Friday to overcome a GOP filibuster, but Republicans blocked the legislation from advancing during a procedural vote. The vote was 54 to 35. Just six Republicans joined with Democrats: Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Rob Portman of Ohio........

.............The GOP filibuster Friday on the Jan. 6 commission Friday means the legislation is likely dead for now. But its failure will be sure to intensify pressure on Democrats to abolish the legislative filibuster altogether and just require a simple majority vote to advance future legislation. ...................

I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.
