A year after the frightening beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the world stands on the brink of a fourth wave of infection as nations race to vaccinate their populations and stave off a new surge in hospitalizations and deaths.

Total reported cases rose across the globe in the last week of February after six weeks of decline, driven in part by new, more virulent variants that transmit between people at startlingly higher rates than the initial strains out of Wuhan, China, and northern Italy.

“This is disappointing, but not surprising,” World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters last week. “This is a global crisis that requires a consistent and coordinated global response.”


The United States recorded about 66,000 new cases a day over the last week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), down 73 percent from the apex reached in early January and similar to levels of transmission from October. But the precipitous decline of late January and early February has plateaued in recent days, raising fears that a new wave is just around the corner.

With 85-90 million people in the US who have either received at least the first of to vaccine shots or are known to have survived (Cases minus deaths on Worldometers), plus an unknown number who survived but were never tested, the population of "Covid-naive" in the US is much shrunken. IOW, the US is fast running out of Fourth Wave fodder. OTOH, EuroLand's and Canuckia's vaccination efforts have been pathetic, possibly to the degree of endangering their citizens.

But I think the target audience for The SHill's Panic Porn is states who have re-opened, not EuroLand and Canuckia whose problems are real.

Some eastern European countries and at least one Balkan country are up significantly. The eye-catcher for me is that Chile is steeply up.

I cannot say the several facts are connected, but: Chile has the 4th or 5th most successful vaccination campaign; Chile is a major customer for a Chinese vaccine that uses weakened/killed virus technology ( mentioned in this Hot Air post, https://hotair.com/archives/jazz-shaw/2021/03/02/china-flood-world-inferior-vaccines/ ); two months after receiving the Chinese vaccines, Chile's daily confirmed cases take a leap.

I realize that Chile's jump might be something as benign as a concurrent mass testing program, but the possibility that the vaccine they're using is infecting people or is simply ineffective and people are changing their habits, thinking they're immune, is scary.

OTOH, the UK is steeply down and the US is still slightly declining after a plunge, while Italy, France, and possibly Germany have seen recent increases ("surge" or "wave" would be an exaggeration).

The UK, which includes Wales, will "lighten" restrictions in one more week.  They decide on restrictions based on number of people in hospitals.  The UK/WALES has been on lockdown most of last year.  I know what happens there due to son living there.  No one could/can leave Wales - police were/are on every road leading out/into Wales and stopping cars.

"Lighten" means you can go outside, be with a certain number of people, eat outdoors at a restaurant.  Stores can let a certain number of customers go inside the store.

I believe removing all restrictions in Texas on Wednesday is a severe mistake.  Wait two to three weeks and we will know if removing restrictions was a mistake.

Bob had his second Pfizer shot last Saturday and he became dizzy as he was going to the car.  He sat in the car for a period of time before he drove home.  The next day, yesterday, he hurt all over his body.  He spoke to someone on the phone and that person also had those symptoms after getting the second shot.

Not really removing all restriction as local judges have ability to keep some restriction based upon hospital covid rate.

When I look at Florida without a mask mandate and their infection rate, it is hard to believe there will be much if any change.  Business can still make the requirements and most will not make a change at this time.

Oh yes, I'm sure they will try and blame it all on the red states that have opened. But if past results are any indicator, any increase won't be limited to those states, so I doubt they'll get much traction with that. Certainly not with the majority of those living in those states, who generally seem to be in favor of opening up.
