Let's state the obvious: The Biden administration is eager to reverse various Trump administration policies. There is one area, however, where they should restrain that undo-button impulse: The Biden administration ought to honor and build upon the diplomatic deals brokered in the Middle East and Africa.
It is easy to be cynical about these agreements, including deals between Israel and the UAE, Sudan, Morocco, and Bahrain. But those who have spent time in the region know the importance of any forward momentum and U.S. engagement in this part of the world, however notional.
As a Navy SEAL, I served in Mauritania in Northwest Africa. I was there to train Mauritanian special operations forces to counter the threat of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), which had recently destabilized the neighboring country of Mali. That experience showed my fellow service members and me the power of U.S. engagement in Africa.
