Let’s Quit Fetishizing the Single-Family Home

California’s lawmakers once again failed to allow more housing in the state. They’re afraid to accept the single-family home is outdated.

When my family emigrated from our native South Africa to Southern California in the 1980s, my parents, my sister and I fell hard for this state’s endless suburban sprawl. To the four of us, the acres of subdivisions that had been mushrooming up across California since World War II were the embodiment of everything we’d been promised about America. A bigger-than-enough house, a two-car garage and a backyard of brilliant green lawn — this was the California Dream we’d seen on TV.

By the time I got to middle school, my immigrant family was able to afford a house with a yard of our own — back then, California really was the land of milk and honey — and I spent my youth in the sun-drenched suburbs. It was a fine place to grow up; in the mass-produced “little boxes made of ticky-tacky” that stretch across California and much of America, I found comfort, safety and a crucial sense of belonging in the American landscape.

Personally as far back as I could remember my immigrant parents owned their own home, which I never considered ticky tacky(did this guy grow up in a neighborhood of Arabs?). I moved out into an apartment at 19 and it sucked, no privacy and inconsiderate asses sharing walls and ceiling. For the next thirty years I lived in a house, quiet bliss with neighbors even in southern California far enough away as to give a sense of privacy. Now thanks to the Barry/Plugs economy We are back in an apartment, DO NOT LIKE! This cretin can push his bullshit communal living all he wants but as far as I am concerned the only people that actually enjoy it are those that grew up in cultures where living on top of each other was normal. Screw Gaia and all her worshippers pushing doom and gloom, I still remember the moron Ehrlich scaring people with his supposed expertise that the Earth in 1968 could not support any larger population and the would be mass starvation, misery and death if we didn't not just stop increasing but cut the population.
