Democrats step up hardball tactics as Supreme Court fight heats up
By Jordain Carney - 09/22/20 03:00 PM EDT

Senate Democrats are limiting the ability to hold committee hearings in retaliation for Republicans decision to try to fill a Supreme Court seat in the middle of an election year, the first action in what is likely to be an increasingly combative battle over procedure in the Senate.

A Democratic aide confirmed that Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) had invoked the so-called “two hour rule,” which can be used to limit the ability to hold committee hearings after the Senate has been in session for more than two hours.

The ability to hold committee hearings is routinely granted with little fanfare on the Senate floor. The Senate came in at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, meaning Democratic cooperation was needed for committees to meet after noon.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) tried to get an exception on Tuesday afternoon for the Senate Intelligence Committee to be able to meet at 2:30 p.m. with the director of National Counterintelligence, where they were expected to discuss election security.

But Schumer also objected to that.

Not sure how procedurally this would work but If we have the votes  just limit the discussion time allowed and go to a vote and Vote.

Yep. The way to deal with this “hardball” tactic is to ignore the judiciary committee altogether and go straight to a senate for a vote. Nothing mandates a rat sh*tshow in some extraconstitutional committee.

Absolutely correct.  The Constitution is notably silent on a requirement for a SCOTUS Nominee be voted upon in a Committee before a floor vote.  Mitch can short circuit this bullshit by simply putting the Confirmation to the floor for a vote, directly.

Mr. McConnell ought to make this plain and state that it will part of the "ground rules" when he announces his schedule for hearings and confirmation.

If the democrat-communists attempt to make a circus out of the hearings, McConnell should move to shut them down and proceed directly to a floor vote.

In any case, if there are to be hearings, they should be STRICTLY limited. I'd recommend 2-3 days at the most, NO EXTENSIONS and NO EXCEPTIONS.

When have the rats not made a circus of these confirmation hearings. Every time since Bork.

Don’t give them the opportunity to gin up smears. Just schedule a day of speeches from the Senate floor followed by a straight vote.
