Magic Johnson to parents: Tell children 'it's not a time to be a tough guy’ with police

Magic Johnson is advising parents to have "tough conversations" with their children about the police and advise them to put their "guard down. "It's not a time to be a tough guy" with officers and act like "you're not going to take crap from somebody," the NBA legend says.

Johnson was asked by California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters if he had advice for parents concerned about children interacting with police.

"When I see a police car, I still get nervous, and I have to, you know, do everything the right way to make sure, first, I don't get pulled over, second, if I do get pulled over, my hands are on the steering wheel. I'm going to abide by the commands, and I'm going to try to do everything the right way. Any instructions that they give me, I'm going to make sure I comply with those instructions," Johnson said in a conversation with Waters on Monday as part of the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference.

It's sad that this is remarkable. I'm "white" and a Baby Boomer, and my parents had a version of this "talk" with me. Because respecting authority is right. When I see a police or CHP car on the freeway or street, I double-check my speed. And when I get pulled over (usually for a tail light that is out - don't laugh, it's true), I do what they say, make sure they can see my hands, etc.. IOW, the stuff Johnson advises and does.

Some half way decent advice to parents.

He could have had an effective message by the following:

1) Not doing an interview for Maxine Walters. If he wanted to do an
interview with her, Magic should know that Maxine is killing blacks.

2) Leave out the bullshit in a decent conversation. That is, ditch this sort
of commentary.


Johnson described today's environment as "tough times" because "police brutality
is running rapid through our country, especially with black men and black women."

This is true bullsh!t and should never leave his mouth. It erases anything positive
he may have said.

As a 18-19 year old I got pulled over a half dozen times. Tried every approach to the officer I could imagine to get out of being cited, nothing worked - always got ticketed. But I knew far better than to resist commands, even without the parental talk.
