Strange Forms of Vitamins Called 'Antivitamins' May Fight Antibiotic-Resistant Superbugs

Traditional antibiotics target bacteria's ability to read its own genetic instructions or construct their protective cell walls, but thanks to the microbes' conniving knack for stealing genes from each other and their environment, we need ever more options to stay ahead of their highly adaptive tactics.

So microbiologist Fabian von Pappenheim and colleagues decided to contribute to the global hunt for antibiotic alternatives by messing with bacteria's need for vitamins, inspired by bacteria's use of this tactic to kill competing bacteria.

Vitamins are vital to all living things for building cellular components, tissue bits and running cell processes.

Antivitamins are similar enough to their vitamin equivalents that they fool biological systems into thinking they're the same molecules, but slightly different in a way that makes them catastrophically faulty substitutes, thereby inhibiting the function of vitamins and becoming toxic to those bacteria that ingested them.

Using computer simulations the team also discovered equivalent human proteins do not seem to be affected by the impostor vitamin.

"The human proteins either do not bind to the antivitamin at all or in such a way that they are not 'poisoned'," said chemist Bert de Groot from the Max Planck Institute.

Just cook, like we used to do,  From scratch, using good products.  That is what I do.  Ideally have a garden and use all of that for your food.  Use horse dung as fertilizer.  Not cow. Not pesticides. I remember, as kids our job was to pick off green potato bugs from the plant.  Ewwwww.  Could not do that now. Coconut oil is a natural antibiotic. Many oils, are. Oregano oil.

There ain't a dang thing wrong with cow dung as fertilizer. Or chicken, or pig... or any manure. Horse is among the weakest forms.

Human manure is the worst. The chance of it containing pathogens. If you are using it in your garden.

Horse manure usually contains more seeds. Weed seeds.

If composted correctly any sh*t is no longer sh*t... And seeds are destroyed.

At the ranch we have a ton of horse crap... and chicken... mixed together and turned for years in a pile, makes about the same thing as down where the cattle are - There it is cow crap and chicken - our meat birds follow the cows kickin down the manure for seeds and larvae. But we collect and compost from the area around the water and where hay has been fed (where the manure is getting out of hand)... And we would pile up the winter, but they are gonna go to slaughter before then. Cow based compost is richer, and takes less time to make. Horse takes years in the pile, even helped along with chicken... So cow is preferred.

As for humanure, there is debate in that (prions, and ONLY prions if well composted) and I fall on the side of caution. Once I am up in the sticks, I will be composting my waste... That happens for 2 years with shavings and straw to aid the breakdown... When that is handled it will go in the fields... I will have enough cow, goat/sheep, and chicken poop to make due without it.
