Face it: Coronavirus is about to shut down your daily lives
by Timothy P. Carney
 | March 11, 2020 04:44 PM

My children have been home this week after their schools shut down amid coronavirus worries. I was going to cover Joe Biden's rally in Cleveland on Tuesday, and that got canceled. I was supposed to speak tonight at a university in Ohio, but they have shut down all campus events effective today.

The National Cathedral has shut down its schools. Fairfax County, Va., and Washington, D.C., have closed school for this coming Monday. I bet you $100 they're not going to open on Tuesday. If you live in the D.C. area, your kids will be home next week. It will only be so long before your workplace tells you to work remotely. Large events of over 1,000 people should also be canceled, according to the D.C. government. Soon that number will be 100. Or even a dozen people.

But this is a national thing. In New York, 3.14 square miles are basically a no-go zone, with multiple schools closed. Seattle finally closed down its schools. Universities across the country are shutting down. The rest are going to follow suit.

This will hit the entire country soon. If you live in the United States of America, the odds are that your kids' school will shut its doors before the end of March. For many, this Friday will be the last day of school for a while.

  • WE are NOT ok!
What about those folks who's jobs are in the service and hospitality industries; cable installers, waitresses, ac repair, grocery clerks, stock people, bank tellers, etc.?  Most of these people live paycheck to paycheck and many don't get paid leave, etc.

Secondly, the U.S. has approximately 1050 cases out of 313 million people....I'm sure the number will grow, but I see this as a bit of overkill?

Why did the WHO downplay this when it could have possibly helped to contain this virus in China???   9999hair out0000
I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

I disagree.  This virus has moved past containment.  Now it is simply a matter of it running its course.  In the coming weeks, people will treat it just like any other cold or flu.  Wide swaths of the population will contract it, stay home for a few days until they recover, and then go about their lives again.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Well done, @corbe .  REM would be proud.

I, for one, am hoping it passes through rapidly and with relatively light severity. If they try to drag these containment measures out for months, it's going to cause huge problems.

Double edged sword. Slowing down the spread means those who need care are more likely to get cared for. The faster it expands the more overwhelmed the healthcare system will be with not enough resources.

    • I try my best ...
Most of us have already been exposed and are showing either no symptoms, or limited symptoms.
Medical services are being overwhelmed mostly by psychosomatic 'patients'.
These are people who are scared to death by the media and rush to hospital with a runny nose.
I would say this is a hit on Donald Trump, except that by November this will all be a memory.
There have been dozens of viruses which have come and gone, this one will achieve the same fate as all the others.
But I am wearing my toilet paper sportcoat whenever I go out, just to be safe.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

  • I don't believe in Trump anymore, he's an illusion
I saw my Pulmonologist this morning and he said that he's not seeing many cases in the ER or ICU, that the H1N1 was much worse and had many more fatalities. We discussed that young children seem to not really be affected and that the deaths that have occurred with Cornavirus have been the the high risk groups, people in their mid sixties and up who have diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiac or pulmonary issues who don't take care of themselves. Considering that I have a surplus of the high risk issues, I'm not worried because I kind a sorta take care of my self and use good hygiene practices and awareness when I am out among the diseased masses.
