Former first lady Barbara Bush suffered from suicidal thoughts due to her husband's decadelong affair, says Susan Page, author of "The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty."

The author of the biography, set to be released Tuesday, revealed details about the Bushes's love life that run contrary to the love-story-like image of their marriage. Among the most shocking is the depression and suicidal thoughts that almost took Bush's life in the mid-1970s.

"Barbara Bush found herself falling into the worst personal crisis she had faced since daughter Robin had died more than two decades earlier," Page said. "Overwhelmed by pain and loneliness, she contemplated suicide."

"She would pull over to the side of the road until the impulse to plow into a tree or drive into the path of an oncoming car had passed."
