Trump delays tariff hikes on Chinese goods due to 'substantial progress' in talks

President Trump announced Sunday he is delaying a U.S. increase of tariffs on Chinese goods after "substantial progress" was made in talks and expects a final agreement to be struck with Chinese President Xi Jinping at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla.

The tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods — to 20 percent, compared to 10 percent currently — were set to kick on at the beginning of next month.

"I am pleased to report that the U.S. has made substantial progress in our trade talks with China on important structural issues including intellectual property protection, technology transfer, agriculture, services, currency, and many other issues," Trump said in a pair of tweets. "As a result of these very productive talks, I will be delaying the U.S. increase in tariffs now scheduled for March 1. Assuming both sides make additional progress, we will be planning a Summit for President Xi and myself, at Mar-a-Lago, to conclude an agreement. A very good weekend for U.S. & China!"

Trump didn't divulge into further detail. He had announced Friday that he will meet Xi for one-on-one talks in Florida.
