Myself...I want the best and the most advanced equipment that can be provided for our military.  That's where I would appreciate my tax dollars to go.

And that costs money.  Our military budgets have been below the levels they need to be since Clinton.

@berdie we had flack vests.  The kind you think of when you see soldiers in Vietnam.  What we didn't have was the ceramic plate body armor that stops an AK-47 round.  We got those about half way through my deployment in 2003-04.

I think a global military presence increases the likelihood of us being attacked by terrorists.

No.  You're completely wrong.

That's mostly what they're pissed off about.

No they are pissed off because we are infidels.  We are Christians or Jews or Atheists who do not believe in the Koran or Allah or Mohammed.

And for that we must die.

Quote
We do not have a uniformed and organized enemy to fight.

And that makes the world inherently more dangerous.  It means we must root them out where they train and live to prevent them from waging war on streets in America.

Your position doesn't make any sense to me.

That's because you lack the knowledge of military history and the military in general to be able to not only understand my position but to be able to talk intelligently about it as well.

Quote
We will not be at more risk by focusing on our defense at home and leaving the rest of the world to deal with its own business.

And yet the last 8 years have proven your statement completely and utterly false.

If another Hitler happens we can have that discussion at that time, but currently there are no threats like that.

Really?  Then you haven't been paying attention to the leaders of Syria and Iran lately.  They are the modern day Hitlers that threaten the world in the 21st Century.

I think the major governments of the world no longer have anything to gain by going to war with each other. The cost is too great.

No they don't have the funding.  The Socialist governments in Europe have invested money that could be going for defense of their homeland into the ever growing welfare states they've created.

And unless this country wakes up we'll be facing the same dilemma more so than we already are.  At least our economic system will allow us to reverse the slide towards the Welfare state crippling the rest of the government/economy.

No.  You're completely wrong.

I don't think I am.

No they are pissed off because we are infidels.

You don't think it has anything to do with us sticking our nose in ME politics for decades?

And that makes the world inherently more dangerous.  It means we must root them out where they train and live to prevent them from waging war on streets in America.

It makes our enemies significantly less threatening. They can kill small amounts of us with cowardly sneak attacks, but they will never be an existential threat. They have no air force, no navy. They are barbarians. A world military presence is a waste of our treasure. Let's build walls and giant floating fortresses like China. I think that's a lot more useful to our safety. It's impossible to completely safeguard ourselves from terrorism.

I know a thing or two about the military.

And yet the last 8 years have proven your statement completely and utterly false.

I disagree.

Really?  Then you haven't been paying attention to the leaders of Syria and Iran lately.  They are the modern day Hitlers that threaten the world in the 21st Century.

You really think those people are a threat to the existence of our nation?

No they don't have the funding.  The Socialist governments in Europe have invested money that could be going for defense of their homeland into the ever growing welfare states they've created.

Ridiculous. Major countries are not interested in war anymore because we're all too connected. The results would be devastating for everybody.

Well that’s twice you’ve alluded to your military knowledge.  Most of us here know @txradioguy  resume.  If you want us to think you’re anything other than another “don’t know a damn thing” Gen-Xer please enlighten us as to your military bona fides.

No. Not if you understand Islam and it's ties to the NAZI's in WWII.

What they have are people that look like anyone in a crowd...except they are strapped with explosive vests and huge ammo caches funded by Islamic Nation States.  And they can strike and kill hundreds of people at any time without warning.

We can't completely safeguard...but we should apply maximum effort to do everything humanly possible to be ready.

With only a few public pronouncements since her election to draw on its clear this brainstem is primarily concerned with how much of our money she gets to play with. But then, she is a self avowed socialist.

No. Not if you understand Islam and it's ties to the NAZI's in WWII.

I don't see how our political meddling wouldn't play a role. They talk about it quite a lot.

What they have are people that look like anyone in a crowd...except they are strapped with explosive vests and huge ammo caches funded by Islamic Nation States.  And they can strike and kill hundreds of people at any time without warning.

We can't fight them until they show themselves. There are new terrorists every day. You can't crush extremism because it is simply a human state of mind. We have been in the Middle East for decades and nothing is improving.

We can't completely safeguard...but we should apply maximum effort to do everything humanly possible to be ready.

We can do that best by focusing on protecting our borders rather than the entire planet.

Really?  Please tell me about your military experience.  Don't spare any detail.

I served for 4 years active duty and have been doing work for the military ever since. I'm not going to get much more detailed than that. Believe me or don't. I don't think it matters that much anyway.

Yes I do.

That's absurd. How? Unorganized barbarians from the Middle East are not going to topple our government. You're seeing danger where there is none.

We wouldn't have to be the world's police if Europe would do their part to defend their borders.  But instead they waste good money after bad on Social Welfare and beg the U.S. to protect them.

Maybe we can find some common ground right here. Screw protecting Europe. If threats to Europe are as real as you suggest then they will fortify themselves quickly after we leave. It's not like we couldn't be back and supporting them in a short amount of time if it was really necessary.

What branch of service?  Where did you do basic training?  What was your MOS?  Your rank?

I'm in the Army.  I went to Basic Training at Ft. Sill Oklahoma in 1992.  I did my AIT at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.  I'm a 46Z40 with combat tours to Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan.  I'm currently a Sergeant First Class with 16 month rated Platoon Sergeant time and 30 days rated as an acting First Sergeant.  I've worked form the Brigade all the way up to the 4 Star General level in my MOS.

Your turn.  If you really have military experience that kind of information should be right on the tip of your tongue and you'll have no problem sharing it because there's no OPSEC involved.  It's just basic military history that you should want to share when challenged.

That's absurd. How? Unorganized barbarians from the Middle East are not going to topple our government. You're seeing danger where there is none.

Really?  Ever hear of 9/11?  A bunch of "unorganized barbarians" flew sophisticated jetliners into buildings in NY City and Washington DC and crumbled them incase your short term memory is failing you.

No...there is no common ground with you and your myopic uninformed progressive view on this.  Your mindset gets innocent people killed by the bushel.

It takes more time and money to repurchase real estate we already own.  We're finding that out now with Russia threatening Western Europe and our military is scrambling to find places for equipment to go because we gave away all the bases we'd already established.

Your view seems ridiculous to me. I don't know what else to say.

That's because you have the knowledge depth of a kiddie pool on this stuff.  You know enough to sound cool to your fellow snowflake friends...but you lat the historical knowledge depth to debate this with someone who knows more about it than you do.

Quote
The idea that our meddling in their politics is a small or non-factor is completely absurd.

Really?  Why is that?

Quote
You seriously think that is why we haven't stopped extremism yet?  :thud:

It's one of the reasons kid.  We had successful ops going to root out al Qaeda right after 9/11 and thanks to Seymour Hersh and the NY Times broadcasting those covert ops on the front pages of the paper...the operations were blown.  We had infiltrated their banking lines and their chatroom lines of communicating and financing operations.  Someone leaked to the Times.  They wrote the stories...they WH asked them to not publish the stories as they would jeopardize current anti terrorism missions...tey refused...the terrorists abandoned the way they'd been doing business and we lost their trail and had to start over.

How many years could we have cut off of stopping Islamic Terrorism had the Times not helped the terrorists evade detection?

Quote
Either way we are wasting our time, blood and treasure.

Says you.  But then you wouldn't say that had you ever been down range and see how we've actually helped the people in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Actually the planning training and execution didn't take that long.

I was just getting ready to say the same thing to you.

Actually if you'd ever been out in the real Army down range at a Forward Base or a platoon observation post...you'd know that my mindset isn't what's getting innocent people killed.

It's isolationist sheep like you that achieve that goal.  Ask Chamberlain how kowtowing to a despot worked for Europe.

Look what happened in the Middle East when Obama recklessly and foolishly pulled forces out of Iraq and left them hanging.  There wasn't an ISIS before he did that.  Now Iran has closer ties to Iraq than we do and were the ones that liberated their country!

Russia is not going to invade the European Union. If that was actually a threat I'm sure they'd find places for us to set up our forces.

They already have invaded.  They illegally annexed the Crimea...they've invaded the Ukraine.  They are holding sailors and ships of the Ukrainian Navy illegally.  Their missiles shot down a Boeing 777 killing everyone on board.  They are coming onto foreign soil and conducting hits on political "enemies" and dissidents.

All of the places we used to have in Germany that we turned back over to their Government...Frau Merkel has seen fit to use them as refugee cams for the flood of military aged muslim men who are now in Germany.  We almost didn't have a place to store maintain and operate a brigade sized combat team's worth of equipment from when Russia invaded the Ukraine.  Only the quick thinking from LTG Hodges to stop the complete shutdown of Coleman Barracks helped us there.

Right now we are spending money to help poor countries like Estonia and some of the other baltic countries build ranges...motor pools and training areas where we can shoot move and communicate to try and make up for what we don't have in Europe anymore.

Russia IS an actual ongoing threat.  But the EU is too cowed and their militaries are too cash strapped to do anything.  Russia knows this.

They also know that we are the only ones that have caused them to take an operational pause in some of the things they are doing in Europe.

But at the same time if Putin decides to move forward...the units we have in Europe to stop him will make Task Force Smith look like a success.

You may have served in active duty for a while, but I think you overestimate what you understand and how well you understand it. This is more than just a religious struggle. Politics plays a big role too.

Really?  Why is that?

Would it piss you off if another nation was occupying our country and deciding for us how it should run? I think it would, a lot. It'd piss me off too.

It's one of the reasons kid.

The only way we will stop Middle Eastern extremism is by killing everybody in the Middle East. If that's a length you're willing to go to you should be advocating the nuclear option.

Says you.  But then you wouldn't say that had you ever been down range and see how we've actually helped the people in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Thanks for keeping my telephones running like they should for four years.  I'm sure that was a strenuous job.

Jobs like 25N and 25B are critical to the security of our military forces. It's a lot more than making sure the telephones work. I'm surprised you didn't know that as somebody that knows everything about the military. Sorry I didn't score low enough on the ASVAB to be pigeonholed into grunt work.

Your spouting the same mindless platitudes and you think it makes you sound smart and informed.

Here's a hint...it doesn't.

A little bit of projection maybe.

Actually the planning training and execution didn't take that long.

That attack was nothing close to being something that could overthrow our government. Barbarians from the Middle East will never be an existential threat. They can hide and attack us like cowards. They're not going to beat us like that.

Actually if you'd ever been out in the real Army down range at a Forward Base or a platoon observation post...you'd know that my mindset isn't what's getting innocent people killed.

You want to keep sending our young people to kill and die globally. I want to bring them home and reinforce America. I think your way gets more young Americans killed.

It's isolationist sheep like you that achieve that goal.  Ask Chamberlain how kowtowing to a despot worked for Europe.

The 21st century is calling. It says it's urgent.

Look what happened in the Middle East when Obama recklessly and foolishly pulled forces out of Iraq and left them hanging.  There wasn't an ISIS before he did that.  Now Iran has closer ties to Iraq than we do and were the ones that liberated their country!

ISIS got as powerful as it did because of military equipment that never would have been in that region if not for our "nation building."

I didn't know Crimea was part of the European Union. The people there wanted to be part of Russia. I'm not saying Putin's hands are clean, but it's hardly an indication of his desire to conquer people that don't want to be conquered by Russia.

But at the same time if Putin decides to move forward...the units we have in Europe to stop him will make Task Force Smith look like a success.

I think your thinking is cowardly and unrealistic. Russia is not going to invade the EU. Putin is not going to risk a possibly nuclear conflict that would end in Russia losing power.
