China-Manufactured School Supplies Sold in US, Canada Found to Contain Toxic Chemicals

Results of laboratory tests detailed in a report released Aug. 7 indicated traces of asbestos, lead and other dangerous chemicals exist in a number of popular school supplies—some of them manufactured in China—sold in the United States and Canada.

After sending 27 school items to an independent laboratory, the U.S. nonprofit Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) released a report that also confirmed—in addition to lead and asbestos—the existence of bisphenol-A (BPA), an industrial chemical used in the manufacture of certain plastics.

For example, PIRG found that green-colored crayons in a box of Playskool brand crayons contained asbestos, a carcinogen that is known to lead to lung cancer and other harmful health conditions. The crayons—which were made in China—are widely available at popular retailers, such as Dollar Tree, where the PIRG researchers purchased them.

A whole lot of things dollar tree sells, mentioned in the article, are from China. Maybe not the foods in general that dollar tree sells but things like drinking glasses, etc. may be. I even know, I once got some after shave from dollar tree and it was made in China.  I have some cocoa butter hand lotion, made in Canada, so I guess, that's okay.  A bit of an alarming article and China has had this problem for quite a while.

First "trace amounts" needs to be quantified. Second, asbestos is only a hazard if you get the fibers in your lungs. It ought to be pretty well encapsulated in the crayon.

With that being said, anyone is nuts to get their food or drugs from China.

It's a deep swamp. China makes/contaminates the stuff, We cough up $6 B a year to FDA to protect ourselves from crooks in the industry, and the FDA sticks its head in the sand.
