If you have gastroesophageal reflux disease  (GERD) and you’ve inexplicably developed bouts of shortness of breath, wheezing, or coughing, you may want to consider the possibility that what’s going on in your gut could be to blame. Believe it or not, GERD can trigger asthma-like symptoms — these are often called extraesophageal symptoms — even if you’ve never been diagnosed with asthma. It also can aggravate asthma in those who have the respiratory condition.
