Former first lady Barbara Bush will no longer seek medical treatment in face of failing health
by Katelyn Caralle

Former First Lady Barbara Bush, 92, decided Sunday to focus on comfort care in the face of her failing health, rather than additional medical treatment.

“Following a recent series of hospitalizations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment, and instead will focus on comfort care,” read a statement from the office of George H. W. Bush.

Bush has been in an out of the hospital the past year battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure.

The former first lady has been married to former President George H.W. Bush for 73 years, and is also the mother to former President George W. Bush.

"She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving,” the statement read.

Prayers for her and her family. I don’t see HW lasting long if she goes.
I stand with Roosgirl.

What's the point of stretching it out if the medical care makes you want to die?

She must have gotten the bill for the O'Care she thought was such a good idea.  Or she found out that Medicare has become an instrument for pushing old folks off the cliff.

My dad's health was failing when he was 89 and all he wanted was to go home from the hospital to die in his home surrounded by the gardens and trees he had planted, and he did, peacefully. My mom wants the same, she is in constant pain and has serious heart issues. I am not to allow heroic measures, she made me promise.

This happened to my dad right before he died. So my prayers to the Bush family. This stinks.

Same with my mother.  She spent decades as an ICU nurse and knew what was happening, so she requested palliative care.  It was very upsetting, but we know she made the decision with clear thought and knowledge.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

Who is going to be the evil mastermind that controls the Bush Crime Family once Babs bites the dust,Laura?

It damn sure isn't going to be any of the creatures in that family that pass for men.

Terrible but inevitable. I hope things work out as well as can be for you.

I have a similar story with my Mom...suffered several years in so much pain...told all of her 5 children that if anything happened to let her go..well it happened and my younger sister gave the order to revive her before any of the other 4 could get there..when my Mom got a little better she signed a DNR order. She died peacefully at the age of 90 4 years ago...I miss here everyday.

My folks don't have long, they are both in their 90's.  Mom has a lot of pain, and her Doc is choking off the painkillers because the State is threatening his license if he treats her pain.  I guess they're afraid she might get addicted or something.  I expect the pain will finish her off after the end of the year when Medicare cuts it off completely.  Dad would be lost without her, so he won't be long after that.

Mrs. Bush always reminded me of my paternal grandmother.  Two tough old birds.  Probably why I've always liked Mrs. Bush so much.  She has guts.

My mom is 87, and while she's having a hard time she's not looking to rush it, though it hurts on the days it's so bad she tell me she wishes God would just take her. That's why I'll make sure that when it's time her wishes will be followed.

I don't always agree with their politics, but I happen to admire the Bushes very much.  92 (almost 93) is a long life, especially when lived to its fullest.  This decision should allow her to pass on her terms.  Hopefully it will not be too painful.

I find it a little odd that they would issue a formal announcement of something so deeply private and personal.

In any event, I wish Mrs. Bush comfort and peace through this.

Same for my grandma. When she turned 90 I told her 'do what you want, eat what you want, and die when you want'.  At that point I think you've earned it. We had her another 6 years but she was ready to go a few before that.
