Florida school shooting: How was killer able to get around school security?

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High has fences, gates and emergency procedures to keep students safe, but a determined gunman found a way around them.

He came when he knew the gates would be open and set off a fire alarm that would dismantle a safety system, officials say. And the school resource officer, who is supposed to help protect students, may not have been on school grounds at the time.

Accused gunman Nikolas Cruz, who had been expelled from the school for behavioral problems, arrived on campus about 20 minutes before the school day ended.

That’s the time school officials usually open the gates around campus so students and staff parked in various parking lots, as well as school buses and parents picking up their kids, can get out easily, said Jerry Graziose, the district’s former director of school safety.

So he got inside the school. Okay, but so what if he doesn't gain entry? I assume there will be plenty of students, teachers, parents milling around outside the school after all the classes let out.
What would stop Cruz, or any other nut, from stepping out from behind a tree, bush, whatever and opening fire. Before he'd be stopped, he could kill scores of people anyway.
Yes, take measures to prevent these nuts from gaining entry to schools. But you still won't be able to stop him or any other deranged person with a weapon from killing numerous people. They could walk into malls, other buildings, etc. and mow down people before they're stopped.
The trick is to either stop them before they go off, or have more people armed and ready to return fire if they, the nuts,  start shooting at people.
But let's not kid ourselves, nuts like Cruz are going to do their damage no matter what preventive measures are taken.  As has been shown motor vehicles can kill large numbers of people just as readily as guns.
Which might mean taking better measures to detect and stop these nuts when they first show signs and stopping them  well before they kill.

Exactly.  We can wring out hands in anguish and try to find ways to slow these mass murder events as we all do every time they occur, but we are doomed to fail.  When a nut gets it into his head to kill, he will do so, no matter what we do in an attempt to prevent it.
