We need to ‘keep it in front of everybody’s nose’

A reporter last night asked San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich why it’s important for the NBA to celebrate Black History Month.

Popovich isn’t one to pull any punches:

‘I think it’s pretty obvious. The league is made up of a lot of black guys. To honor that and understand it is pretty simplistic. How would you ignore that? But more importantly, we live in a racist country that hasn’t figured it out yet.’

Maybe Popovich should stick to playing with his balls. And seeking a Black coach to replace him.

I wonder whether his being surrounded by racists on a daily basis has colored (no pun intended) his opinion.

Popovich is a great coach who says stupid things. If Popovich wants to suck up to his black players, I'm not going to get too excited about it.
Any coach or front office big shot who doesn't come out for the latest cause celebre concerning black issues will probably lose his job.
It's a fact that white big shots in sports cannot say certain things i.e. Donald Sterling while black big shots can get away with all sorts of  racist statements.
The little racist Spike Lee is considered a great fan for the Knicks . Part Knicks owner Jayz can wear a racist medallion, and no one says anything.

I have less and less interesting in sports not because of skin color - because I'm not a bigot -  but because it's all about marketing and advertising revenues and not about the sport itself.
