A car attempted to force its way through the gates at a Royal Air Force base used by the U.S. Air Force on Monday, prompting a lockdown, reports said.

A “significant incident” was reported at Royal Air Force Mildenhall in Suffolk, police tweeted. A Ministry of Defence (MoD) source told Sky News a man driving a car tried to force the vehicle into the base.

The man has been taken into custody, according to Sky News.

Suffolk police urged the public to avoid the area until further notice.

A man has been arrested after apparently trying to drive through a checkpoint at a base used by the US air force in Suffolk.

Shots were fired by US personnel before the man was detained at RAF Mildenhall.    ...

RAF Mildenhall has previously been a potential target for a terror attack against US military personnel. In May 2016, Junead Khan was given a life sentence for preparing terrorist acts after a court heard how he used his job as a delivery driver to gather information about the base.
