HOUSTON (KTRK) --
At least one city leader is questioning the Red Cross's choice of hotels while coming to Houston to help with Harvey relief.

City Councilman Dave Martin dubbed the charity the "Red Loss." He made the point last week at city hall, claiming he hadn't seen the charity in his district.

Five days later, they still haven't shown up in Kingwood, Martin claims.

Flood victims like Ronald Leggett, who live in Kingwood echo Martin's complaints.

"I haven't seen them," Leggett said. "I've been here almost every day."

But that's not what really has Martin upset.

Some of the luckiest Red Cross volunteers are staying the night at the St. Regis Hotel, one of the city's finest 5-star places to spend the night.

They are horrible.  The AMERICAN Red Cross, that is.  The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is evidently still okay.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

My wife has a friend Irma left destitute in FL, with a family.  We bypassed the Red Cross and just sent the guy cash. Do you have any idea how difficult that is when there are no banks and no AT&T?
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16
I will NOT comply.

The stupid bitch that runs the Red Cross drops $500K in her purse a year for doing absolutely nothing. Any wonder why this type of culture permeates the rest of this fraud charity?

I got CPR training from my local Red Cross. For people and would you believe for dogs  cats?

On that local level they are good. Their community blood drives are wonderful. But to donate to the national one?

This breaks my heart. I have volunteered at charities and I wouldn't even take the coffee even though they said that was free. I would bring my own.

Adopt a puppy or kitty from your local shelter
Or an older dog or cat. They're true love❤️

Did they pay for the rooms or did the hotel donate them?

That said, I live in Tampa and have traveled down from Jacksonville right before the storm.   I haven't seen any Red Cross here.

The saying now is, "it's about the optics."  Whether the rooms were donated or not, it looks bad for the Red Cross, especially since the charity has been accused of shady dealings before.

There are far more reputable charities than the Red Cross.  I expect the ones listed on this site for Hurricane Harvey will gladly take your money for Irma too.

If you tried to get a hotel room in Houston after the storm, you might understand why the choices are rather limited in the moderately priced range.  Like closest available is in Dallas.
