Japan and South Korea will battle NK way before much presence of the US takes place.  They have MUCH more to lose.

My mom told me the other day, all this talk about the nukes is reminding her of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I'm going to ask those smarter here than me, is she right?
Cuba was on our doorstep.  A very very big deal.

This is nowhere near out doorstep. The ramifications for us are far less than for Japan, South Korea or even for China and Russia.

I hid under a desk as a grade schooler back then.  We were certainly taking it seriously.

In my lifetime, the only events I remembered as clearly was the Kennedy assassination, man on the moon, and 9/11.

Thank you, @IsailedawayfromFR
I will confess, I have no recollection of this event, I was a month old when it happened. What's happening with North Korea has me staying up tonight deathly afraid. Ok it's almost 3 am the dark night of the soul time too.

I remember. My father had a compass, drawing circles on the map on the kitchen table, with the point in the middle of the National Mall. He explained what each of them meant in terms of destruction, fires, burns, radiation, and calmly told me we'd have to take the boat to Virginia to get away from all that if the Soviets in Cuba launched a missile. He did not mention the possibility of a short round...

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

You really should not be so afraid of this. No it isn't good news at all, but nuclear war is not imminent. On the other hand, if I lived is South Korea, I'd be very worried...

@Freya By all means, I would not be worried. Japan, the Philippines, fleet assets, and the like are far more likely targets than the East Coast of the US.

@Smokin Joe , thanks.  Like I said, it's 3 am. My mind wanders... you know.....

I just had a glass of warm milk and I should be able to go back to sleep.
