Malcolm “Mac” Phillips of Pembroke outlived his family, but when the 92-year-old veteran died this week he was honored with a final salute he would have appreciated.

PEMBROKE - When Pembroke veterans’ agent Robin Kernan heard that a local World War II veteran who died recently was going to be buried with no family attending his funeral, she knew she had to do something.

“He outlived his sweetheart and his neighbors were his family and his caretakers,” Kernan said. “I don’t know if he has any living relatives.”
