Self-driving cars may soon be able to make moral and ethical decisions as humans do
July 5, 2017

Can a self-driving vehicle be moral, act like humans do, or act like humans expect humans to? Contrary to previous thinking, a ground-breaking new study has found for the first time that human morality can be modelled meaning that machine based moral decisions are, in principle, possible.

The research, Virtual Reality experiments investigating human behavior and moral assessments, from The Institute of Cognitive Science at the University of Osnabrück, and published in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, used immersive virtual reality to allow the authors to study human behavior in simulated road traffic scenarios.

  • I don't believe in Trump anymore, he's an illusion
So in the future cars will be able to decide whether to take an action to save itself or to sacrifice itself to save others? When that day comes man will no longer be the only higher form of life on Earth.

No, a machine can be programmed to approximate an average of some sort of moral standard.
I think, when it reaches that level, what you will have is demonically operated machinery.

And we are already not the only 'higher form of life on earth'.

The opportunity to murder people using the victims car is going to go up exponentially. The car just decides to drive off a cliff for no apparent reason... The police aren't going to be able to reliably dissect the cars code to see if it was tricked into doing something deadly. Especially if it was hacked over the air.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
So, if your car has a few scratches and a little rust, the upholstery is worn and it overheard you talking about trading it in, and it gets despondent and decides to end it all... :thud:

How God must weep at humans' folly! Stand fast! God knows what he is doing!
Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
