The social fabric is eroding, but not equally across the nation. The interior of the nation is much more grounded than the coasts in a number of ways.
As our financial position continues to erode, it's going to cause a great deal of fracturing. If interest rates were a mere 8% today we'd spend half our tax revenue in paying interest. We would have to cut the military and social programs in half. Our cities would be burning and we'd barely be able to defend ourselves. That's not considering a recession where revenues would plunge and deficits would balloon.
The Federal problem is not going to get resolved. At some point, the states will have to fill in for the DC vacuum.
