Continuing its federal shakeups, the Trump administration dismissed Obama-appointed U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on Friday — less than three years after he took the post under former President Barack Obama.

Murthy was relieved of his duties effective immediately, and his position will be temporarily filled by Deputy Surgeon General Sylvia Trent-Adams as the White House looks for a replacement, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.

The department commended Murthy on a “smooth transition into the new Trump administration” and noted that he will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps of Public Health Service.

The reason for Murthy’s abrupt dismissal was not immediately known, and Health Services employees were apparently surprised by the move, according to the New York Times.

Murthy, 39, was born in Britain and has degrees from both Harvard and Yale. He was appointed by President Barack Obama in November 2013 and made headlines for labeling gun violence a health threat to the American public. The NRA staunchly opposed his Senate confirmation in 2014.
