Graphic Fail: USA Today Thought MOAB Was Almost As Destructive as Hiroshima A-Bomb

On Thursday, the U.S. military dropped a MOAB (Mother Of All Bombs) on an ISIS tunnel complex in Nangahar Province in Afghanistan. Shortly after that, USA Today posted a breathtakingly ignorant graphic purporting to show that the MOAB contained over 70 percent of the destructive force of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.

This epic fail occurred even though the following comparison was known early on:

So it contained over 8000 tons of TNT?  I didn't think our aircraft had that kind of lifting capacity...

They don't. It was dropped by a C-130 that can lift about 21 tons.

Since it's H6, it would be only about 6000 tons.

There are other explosives besides TNT, like RDX, that have an explosive power that is multiples of TNT by weight.

The old timers here in my hood all have been talking about the day they tested the MOAB here at Eglin.  It shook the ground in three counties (Walton, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa)  and you could see the Mushroom Cloud from The beaches in Destin and Miramar!  Lot of Foxtrotting Sierra going on!
