CHICAGO — All the seats on Air Force One were taken. The extra plane that follows the president, known as “Support,” was full, too. The White House staffers who didn’t make the cut booked commercial.
There’s an Obama reunion-wake-celebration-pep rally-group therapy session scheduled for prime time Tuesday night as the president gives his farewell speech, and they weren’t going to miss it.
And it’s not just them — Obama campaign and White House alumni are flying in from all over the country, piling into cars to get to the convention center just outside of downtown where Barack Obama claimed victory on election night 2012. It was a win Obama felt he could claim as his own — he’s often talked privately about how he thinks any Democrat could have won in the 2008 atmosphere — and that many of his staff convinced themselves might represent a true dynamic shift away from the Republican resistance that had been blocking them for years.
