Meet Fred the Afghan
A U.S. Marine brought home a stray dog that he met while serving a tour of duty in Afganistan

At a glance, former Marine Craig Grossi and his dog, Fred, seem like any other pet and owner combination. Grossi dotes on Fred, and Fred soaks up his affection.
In reality, Grossi risked his career in the Marines to bring Fred home after the pair bonded during his deployment to Afghanistan.
Fred is originally a stray dog from the Sangin District in Helmund Province, Afghanistan, and met Grossi during his 2009 tour of duty in the area. Though under orders from the military not to interact with strays in the area, Grossi was drawn to Fred’s friendly and calm demeanor, and the two struck up an unlikely friendship.
