Summarizing, the Florida boy was the only one of the 3 to decide to go down this slide of this water park where they were trespassing (lawsuits?); halfway down, his sled got caught, he was trying to "wriggle free, he fell 35 feet to his death". It looks like he came from a nice family. My condolences. It must have been terror to find out all of a sudden one was stuck there and of course, bad idea. One can get an idea of this per the picture below.

Florida boy, 16, on Wisconsin family vacation to 'see snow for the first time' plummets to his death after he tried to sled down a snow-covered water park slide

Addison Reed Williams, 16, was visiting Wisconsin from Florida with his family
The family was looking forward to experiencing snow for the first time
The teen, his brother, and a friend climbed over a padlocked fence into the water park, which was closed for the season
The three climbed to the top of an 85-foot snow covered water slide so they could slide down
Two decided not to go, but Williams slid down and became stuck halfway down
As he tried to wriggle free, he fell 35 feet to his death

The best thing in that situation would be to stay put; almost the only thing to do that is near reasonable. I'd have to see the sled; was it more like a snowboard, maybe try to get off it from the front and slide down. That would be a hair-raising experience too.

I have no idea if this applies in this case, and don't want to imply that it does, but I do wonder if helicopter parenting can contribute to this sort of thing?  The child never learns the limits because parents keep them from learning about limits and consequences.  Add superheros and video games, and they might really not understand the implications of their own actions.

I watched the news report at the article, one sees on the slide, that is indeed, a patch of snow where one sees that white.

Maybe that's where he got stuck. I'd have to see the sled, was it one of these one sits in, I can see how that could be dangerous.

In the meantime, there were probably plenty of little hills he could have had plenty of fun sliding down; but no, they had to go to a water slide!

These Florida kids probably didn't know about the park, or too much. So, it's clear to see where that leads. Someone suggested it.

If there were steps leading up to the top of the slide, I'd probably not even want to walk those in wintertime.

Tragic.  Some don't get to survive youth-hood.

It is a miracle that I survived my youth.  My sister tells me that my guardian angel is going to meet me at the pearly gates with a switch for making him work so hard.

or permissive parenting that tells the child they can do whatever the heck they like, drink, sex with everyone...

From the article, the young man had little to no experience with snow.

I wouldn't severely blame bad parenting in this case, a lot of youth partake in something mischievous like this, it's just that in this case, there were dire consequences.

Anyone ever criminally trespass? Some may have.

If I had to guess, you have 2 Florida brothers who sound like they've never seen snow, barely seen snow and though the story doesn't directly state it, another teen who is probably from Wisconsin.

Who knows, maybe this Wisconsin youth had done this before with friends from Wisconsin.

As said, where would they get such a hare-brained idea to do this?

If blame has to go somewhere, the most likely party I would be blaming would be the boy who is from that area. This isn't proven but sounds like the case.

Sonny Bono skied into a tree. Accidents happen during dangerous activities.

OTOH 2 of 3 did not attempt the slide.

News stories seem to say the family was staying at a resort the water slide is partially named after, "Mount Olympus" and full name is something like the "Mount Olympus - Rome" hotel is where they were staying, so they probably saw that water slide themselves. I thought maybe they were visiting someone in that state.

Also, per other stories, the deceased is one of triplets.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
No parent should ever live to see their child die. My sympathies.

That said, sounds like this guy wanted to write checks is a** couldn't cash. Having been 16 and remembering some of my moron, d-bag classmates, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Also, about that patch of snow, the sleigh rider may have had a devil may care attitude about trying to get through the snow and rocked the sled;

It looks like the snow patch was about 2/3rds down the slide, from that snow, I'd think he could have leveraged himself out of the sled, toss it to the side and slowly just try to make it down.

It doesn't look like he had far to go.

Some sleds you sit in, others you sit on, they are more like snow boards I'd say. He probably just wanted to hurry through all of this.

Thinking over this thread more and not meaning to bump it up; but these guys must not have known snow or they didn't look at the slide, any number of catastrophic things could have happened, you hit a patch of snow going at high velocity and what happens?

Conceivably, he could have flown right off.

I think there is a relatively new ski sport, I can't remember the name but they go down on long man-made ice slopes, "crash skiing" or something.
