WATCH: Russian Aircraft Carrier Smokes Through English Channel

The Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov transited the English Channel on Friday en route to Syria.

Likely envisioned as the latest display of Russian power projection, the move appears to have backfired.

Photos and videos captured by international media showed the vessel billowing large plumes of black smoke, drawing jokes on social media that the steam-powered ship was actually a 19th century relic fueled by coal.

In 1976 Israel had a civilian jet hijacked and flown to Entebbe, Keyna.  The battle group I was in was sent into the Indian Ocean and headed for Kenya.  The Russians sent a destroyer squadron to monitor our movements and way back then it wasn't difficult to figure out where their ships were as they were burning coal oil.  It takes away a lot of the "stealth" to burn something like coal oil so that the smoke plume on the horizon is visible before the ship.  By the way, has anyone reported Russia for their polluting of the air to Lurch or Imam Obama? :silly:

AT least it has a tugboat on stand-by to tow it back in case the rustbucket breaks down again

The ship was deemed such a liability during its 2011 deployment in the Mediterranean that the US navy kept a close watch to make sure that it did not sink.

When a ship goes dead in the water or is so far out to sea they can't reach a bingo field, its known as "blue water flight ops."  The Ruskie pilots must be pooping their poopy suits thinking about when it goes DIW. :tremblant:

So where are all the Putinistas to tell me how much better these guys are than we are?

I read recently that the Admiral Kuznetsov is in such a bad state of repair that tugs accompany it wherever it goes, in case it breaks down and needs a tow...
