Sonny Liston was a ferocious fighter, the heavyweight champion of the world and the man Cassius Clay beat to win the title for the first time, igniting his own legend. And yet, outside of boxing, Liston was a haunted man, initiated early into a life of crime and decimated by drugs when his boxing career faltered. His untimely end was long thought to be accidental and self-inflicted, courtesy of a heroin-filled needle in his arm. Now the book “The Murder of Sonny Liston” by Shaun Assael wonders if another might have pushed the fatal plunger.
Larry GetlenNew York PostOctober 15, 2016More Yeah, maybe he was, maybe he wasn't. Do a lot of people care? I don't think so. It wasn't like he was a beloved athlete. And he certainly wasn't the only big-name athlete to die from a drug overdose. Remember Big Daddy Lipscomb ? Dead from heroin overdose at age 32. And then we had Len Bias die from a cocaine overdose in 1986.Liston was the epitome of a thug athlete. He did prison time for muggings and armed robbery, and he worked as an enforcer for the Mob when he got out of prison. If he was murdered, I think a lot people would have said "good" or "who cares?" When he got whipped by Ali everybody but the bookies and the mob celebrated. Or the average shmoes who had put money on him as "sure thing." But I could be wrong, and often am.
