Poll: Independents break for Clinton as national lead widens

By Jonathan Easley

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has opened up a 5-point lead over Republican Donald Trump nationally as independent voters have moved strongly into her corner, a new poll finds.

A Quinnipiac University survey released Friday found Clinton taking 45 percent support over Trump, at 40 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson is at 6 percent in the poll, and Green Party nominee Jill Stein takes 3 percent.

In the same poll from mid-September, Clinton held only a 1-point lead over Trump in a four-way match-up.

Since the first presidential debate, self-described independents have abandoned Trump in favor of Clinton.

In the same survey from mid-September, Trump led 42 to 35 among independents, with Johnson taking 15 percent. Clinton leads 46 to 32 among independents in the latest poll, with Johnson’s support reduced to 10 percent. Johnson has seen a drop in poll numbers recently, as voters begin to question his fitness to be president.

In addition, Clinton’s lead among women, 53 to 33, is greater than Trump’s lead among men, 42 to 35.

And non-white voters break 63 to 18 for the Democrat, while white voters only support Trump by a 51 to 38 margin.

“Post-debate, Hillary Clinton checks all the boxes,” said Quinnipiac pollster Tim Malloy. “With her base of women and non-white voters now solidly behind her and independent voters moving into her column, Donald Trump gets a wake-up call. The Indies are leaving in droves.”

The Quinnipiac University survey of 1,064 likely voters was conducted between Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 and has a 3 percentage point margin of error.

Independents will continue to vacillate up to November 8th...that's what they do. It was but a week ago that Trump was leading with independents in double digits.

The last couple elections have seen a trend for later and later decisions. Then come D day, they either break left or stay home.

I remember 1980, and how it broke for Reagan during the last weekend. The aftershocks were felt in Europe, as I was living in Germany at the time.

Will the combined weight of Hillary's corruption and Obama's economy create the same dynamic for Trump? I think that's up to Trump, and how he performs in the last two debates. Hillary is disliked and distrusted by nearly 2/3 of Americans, although Trump is near that. Who will be disliked the least in November?

Trump campaign is canceling hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising in Fla, NC, OH, possibly other states, per two buying sources.

With the unanswered ads Clinton is running, I seriously doubt that.  I just saw an ad for Clinton that featured a retired missile silo officer saying that Trump shouldn't be president because he would unilaterally launch a nuclear missile strike.  That is a flat out lie - the president cannot order a missile launch without getting the Secretary of Defense's countersignature, and a clearly rogue president can be removed by the vice president and a majority of the executive heads.  In other words, if Trump really tried to go rogue and launch an unjustified nuclear strike, it would never happen because (a) he would never get the required countersignature, and (b) he would be removed.  Basically, the only situation in which Trump could launch a nuclear missile strike would be exactly the same situation that would justify any other president in launching such a strike, even a president Clinton.

Very simple:  she's turned Trump's own stupid mouth and tweets against him to paint him as a dangerous unhinged chauvinist monster.  And he hasn't done jack sh*t to counter that portrait.  If anything, he's compounded it and added decorative flourishes to it.

Assuming this poll is true, and assuming this holds, it's lights out for the Trump Campaign

Romney did very well among independents in 2012

While Indies can definitely shift back even this late in the game, this is still not good. It means the campaign now has to expend more capital to get them back, and possibly leave other areas undefended.

It also give the opposition more mojo from which they can add to while cutting the legs underneath you. Not a good thing to happen for the Trump team in the 2nd week of October.
The Republic is lost.

But she didn't paint him. Trump painted him and called it entertainment. To the roars of his supporters approval.

Obama has a 55% approval rating, and some relatively positive economic news about September.

Trump is working against all of this and his own fool mouth.

Hillary is President unless something big happens: either economic collapse, terrorist attack, or HIllary collapsing in public or saying he doesn't like black people.

The economic news is a fraud and everyone knows it. Are people going to believe the Regimes bullshit numbers or their own lying eyes?

They will probably believe the BS numbers. While un and under employment is a problem, it's only a problem for a minority of people. Not enough to put Trump over the top.

But she didn't paint him. Trump painted him and called it entertainment. To the roars of his supporters approval.

He provided all the ingredients, she's just making sure the cake is properly baked.  You should see some of the ads she's coming out with now.  I just saw an ad that features a retired missile silo officer saying he's afraid Trump might start a nuclear war.  Most of the ad is nothing but sound bites from Trump, and they're easily knitted into a narrative that makes it sound like this guy is correct.

Maybe if the yak tells people it's a flaming leftist, Trumps voters will make it the next president instead of Donald. they follow Donald evermore leftward by the day. Yesterday misogyny was entertainment, today the highly touted muslim ban is a bad thing. Left we go!

Trump is less likable than Hillary, that is quite an achievement
