Donald Trump is a unique threat to American democracy

 By Editorial Board July 22

DONALD J. TRUMP, until now a Republican problem, this week became a challenge the nation must confront and overcome. The real estate tycoon is uniquely unqualified to serve as president, in experience and temperament. He is mounting a campaign of snarl and sneer, not substance.

To the extent he has views, they are wrong in their diagnosis of America’s problems and dangerous in their proposed solutions. Mr. Trump’s politics of denigration and division could strain the bonds that have held a diverse nation together. His contempt for constitutional norms might reveal the nation’s two-century-old experiment in checks and balances to be more fragile than we knew.

Any one of these characteristics would be disqualifying; together, they make Mr. Trump a peril. We recognize that this is not the usual moment to make such a statement. In an ordinary election year, we would acknowledge the Republican nominee, move on to the Democratic convention and spend the following months, like other voters, evaluating the candidates’ performance in debates, on the stump and in position papers. This year we will follow the campaign as always, offering honest views on all the candidates. But we cannot salute the Republican nominee or pretend that we might endorse him this fall.

A Trump presidency would be dangerous for the nation and the world.

I am truly in the effing Twilight Zone.

As are we all, that 14 million Americans would see Donald Trump as some kind of solution to anything.

This is what everyone who payed attention this election cycle has been saying from the week Trump rode his golden escalator down to announce his candidacy.

It's not new, except for the willfully blind.  Those whose only thought was to destroy the GOP.

Well, you've got it, Trumpists.  There is no GOP, only Trump.

And he will eventually turn on you.

I disagree.

Trump is not a threat to American democracy.

He is a threat to a Constitutional Republic, NOT a democracy.

A democracy - or 5 wolves and a sheep deciding what is for dinner, is Trump's greatest strength and power.  He can appeal to base instincts, fears and tell a largely Constitutionally ignorant people that he alone can solve all the problems of the nation - because the Constitution is a 'nice document' but we should not commit suicide by adhering to it, k?

Trump would be democracy's biggest champion, because no one can create a mob spectacle with breads and circuses like Trump can.

The best bread, the absolute finest circuses.  I'm telling you.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

Two liberal Democrats running for President

One of them has been openly and overtly vicious and hostile towards conservative Republicans lately, and it's not Hillary.

Trump can't win like this, assuming he ever planned to win.
