One thing about researching a USFL book is you see how absolutely awful Donald Trump was 30-some years ago.
Newspaper headlines from the 1980s:
- "Trump Playing the Media like a Drum" (Buffalo, NY columnist Larry Felser)
- "Trump Asks Owners to Help Pay Flutie, Benefit to League Noted" (UPI)
- "Be Honest, Mr. Trump" (New York Times columnist Dave Anderson)
- "USFL deals its Trump card: ‘Rozelle offered me franchise’" (Bryan Burwell, New York Daily News)
- "Trump: Ego Champ" (Alex Beam, The Boston Globe)
(Pictures of the newspaper clippings in question at the link, with some of them having legible text.)
It’s actually quite remarkable, and somewhat reminiscent of my Barry Bonds biography of a decade ago. You call 10 … 20 … 30 … 40 … 50 … 60 former USFL players, coaches and officials, ask about Donald Trump, and they ALL loathe the man, and blame his selfishness and ego and greed for the collapse of a good football league.
I’m not saying this because I dislike Donald Trump.
I’m saying this because it’s the first reason why I disliked Donald Trump.
The way he ran the New Jersey Generals, and bullied the league into a quick death, will be the way he leads America.
This should scare you.
