Donald Trump is defeating Ted Cruz in the GOP race to the White House by appealing to nationalism rather than conservatism, political strategist Dick Morris tells Newsmax TV.

Trump will be the Republican nominee, Morris said Monday on "Dennis Michael Lynch: Unfiltered," because Cruz was selling ideology while Trump was selling nationalism.

"Cruz was saying vote conservative. Trump was saying vote American," Morris said. "In fact, when Cruz accused Trump of being not conservative, I think to a certain extent that helped Trump."

Morris compared Cruz to Robert Taft, who was pushed by conservatives in 1952.

"He was the right-winger of the '40s and the '50s just like Cruz is now," he said. "The Republican Party nominated moderates and they lost. The conservatives said, 'Now it's time for a right-winger,' but it wasn't. Americans weren't fed up with liberals, they were fed up with ideology."

Instead, Republicans nominated someone from outside politics, retired Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, who won two terms.

Trump, if elected, will disappoint people who think he is conservative, Morris said, though he will "make America work."

Trump will do much to advance the country, though some of his actions will be seen as liberal, and some as conservative, he said.

"Charles De Gaulle in France was just like that and when he was running for president after the Fourth Republic had screwed up horribly and they were begging him to come back, a
reporter said, 'What will you do if you win?' and he said, 'When I assume power, I will know what to do with it.' It's essentially what Trump is saying."

Trump's nationalism is just repackaged Buchanan isolationism.   With a wall that Mexico is going to pay for around it.       

For me, it's difficult to imagine that people really, truly, actually believe that King Trumpy is going to build this wall he talks about.  Neither party wants a wall..... and I don't think King Trumpy is going to get it built by decree..... even though his subjects think he will.

Yep...   Last September I went to see King Trumpy in Oklahoma City.   Took a bunch of pictures etc....  shared with the crowd at notsofreerepublic.....   I went in part to see the phenomon and in part because he was appealing.   But it didn't take long and not even a lot of study to realize this guy is a major con artist.  That's probably one of the best things you can say about him.   Pretty much goes down hill after that.    Oh ..... I did buy one of those stupid red hats when I went to see him.

I agree with Morris to some extent.  Trump is not an American conservative, i.e. classical liberal.  He's a right-winger of the European variety.  Populism, unrestrained nationalism, and welfare chauvinism are not in keeping with our traditions.  If the GOP wants to go down that path, they'll have to do it without me.
