Cruz's "Basketball Ring" at Home of Hoosiers Film
« on: April 27, 2016, 05:31:06 am »
Oh Ted, maybe you should have gone to Canada and shot a rubber thing in the webby thing with the wooden thing.   :thud:

I've asked before, but who or whom is/are advising this guy spiral into irrelevancy?

This is Indiana, not Alberta, Ted!!

It’s often a risky game when politicians attempt to discuss sports because it opens themselves up to completely irrelevant scrutiny.

But Ted Cruz made it too easy.

During a rally at the Hoosier Gym Community Center in Knightstown, Ind., Cruz referred to a basketball hoop as a “basketball ring” right there in that famous gym.

He was measuring the hoop in an attempt to recreate this scene from Hoosiers.

It wasn’t referred to as a “ring” in the film, though.

Cruz could have called the hoop a goal, rim, basket or a cylinder (weird, but correct), and nobody would have blinked an eye. But a ring?

That isn’t right. That isn’t right at all.

Yes, I saw and it failed miserably. The set up made the whole thing a bust, especially to people who had never seen the movie.

Making a faux pas about basketball in Indiana is tantamount to mortal sin. You'd think his handlers would have better prepared him.

I played varsity basketball as a starting 6' PG at a high school of 2400 students in Oregon, a state not known for its basketball knowledge, and even our fans would have gasped at this failure in basketball knowledge.

Going to Indiana, at Milan High School, and pulling this lame-o stunt is just such a Saturday Night Live skit that I can't imagine what this doofball Cruz would do in a real election.  Well, I do know, since he's losing this one miserably to actual voters.

The man is clearly a genius in terms of intellect, and I mean that literally, but he's a socially awkward robot who just may be on the Asperger's spectrum after watching his tone-deaf act as a politician over the last month or so.

Again, who is advising him?  Anyone?

?? Is that a regional thing to be just one (kind of like soda/pop/coke)? I've heard hoop and ring. If you search Amazon, you find Hoop, Ring, and Rim all referring to the same thing.

Exactly.  Interesting how Cruz is blasted for using alternate terminology, and Trump given a free pass when he says he could shoot someone and he'd still have supporters.

The roots of basketball are firmly embedded in Canada. In 1891 the game was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian who hailed from Almonte, Ontario.

Having been given the task of creating a new indoor sports activity while conducting a physical education class at the international YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith designed what we now call basketball. The original game involved 13 rules and a peach basket hung ten feet above the floor. Even though it took place in the United States, at least ten of the players who participated in the first-ever game were university students from Quebec.

Has anybody ever seen Cruz doing anything physical, sports, etc.?

Baseball, football, soccer, skiing, tennis, golf, jogging, hockey, etc.? Even ring ball?. Even dribbling a ring ball on the floor?. Shooting a ring ball, up at the ring?.

BTW Sen. Trump packs them in, at the ring ball stadiums.

Sweet.  That's where the Milan title game was played, right?

Gordon Hayward and Shelvin Mack were awesome there!  I played baseball in JC at Taft in California but knew I wasn't good enough for the minors or even a 4-year college after two years.  It was fun though and room, board, and tuition for two years didn't hurt!

I played AAU basketball all over the country.  A-lert played major college ball and obviously played in more places than I did.  I've never once heard it called a "ring."

A-lert, have you?

Maybe that's what they call it in Alberta?  Certainly not in Indiana...

What kind of middle-school level childishness is that kind of attack? It's totally irrelevant.

Never ever heard "ring" in reference to basketball. Hoops all the time. Go Dawgs!

Hinkle Fieldhouse is amazing. The Milan Mircle was a little before my time, but I knew a few people from Milan.
