Axelrod: Sanders would need a 'landslide' to beat Clinton

By Jessie Hellmann

Democratic strategist David Axelrod on Sunday said "time is running out" on Bernie Sanders, adding that the Vermont senator would need a "landslide" to defeat Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton.

"Hillary Clinton has a fairly significant delegate lead, and Bernie Sanders would have to win landslide after landslide starting in New York to change that math," Axelrod, a former senior adviser to President Obama, said on CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday.

"He's run a splendid campaign ... but at this point, it just looks like time is running out," Axelrod said.

Axelrod said it would also be very difficult for Sanders to flip superdelegates to his side, something the senator maintained would happen because of his momentum from winning eight of the last nine Democratic contests.

Clinton leads Sanders in pledged delegates, 1,289 to 1,038, according to The Associated Press delegate tracker. That lead grows when Clinton's superdelegates are added in. She has 469 compared to Sanders's 31.
