Trump Slams Evangelical Leader Vander Plaats on Twitter
« on: January 31, 2016, 11:27:43 pm »
I have no clue who Vander Plaats is, but this did cause some interesting revelations outside of the Twitter tantrum all because he endorsed Cruz over Trump.

Quote
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump unleashed a slew of Twitter attacks on Iowa evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats Sunday morning, the second time he has done so in less than a week.

.@bobvanderplaats is a total phony and dishonest guy. Asked me for expensive hotel rooms, free (and more). I said pay and he endorsed Cruz!

.@bobvanderplaats asked me to do an event. The people holding the event called me to say he wanted $100,000 for himself.Phony @foxandfriends

(and many more tweets linked.. jumping to this....)

Trump says that Vander Plaats, head of the Iowa-based Family Leader, asked him to stay in his hotels for free and also requested he speak at an event while seeking $100,000 for himself....

....As to Trump's claim that Vander Plaats sought $100,000 for himself, the Des Moines Register's chief political reporter Jennifer Jacobs contacted the group to whom Trump spoke.

The paper found that Trump was paid $100,000 to speak at Iowa's Land Investment Expo a year ago, directly contradicting Trump’s claim.

I tried to keep the excerpt brief but this is really bizarre, far more than usual.  Whomever is tweeting for Trump may be drinking or something.

Some of it is typical Trump stuff, but Vander Plaats doesn't have clean hands.  Santorum and Romney can tell you all about how much an endorsement costs.  (Romney refused to pay, so it went to Huckabee that year.)

I know that Santorum has met privately with Trump on a number of occasions, I suspect that Rick had filled in Trump on this topic.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am tired of these operatives that merge Religion into Politics/Government as a business.  I am hoping that more of it gets exposed throughout this election season.  It has no place in the politics or government of this nation, and needs to be excised out.  YMMV.

Vander Plaats actually endorsed Cruz fairly quietly back in mid-December.  Trump started his Twitter rant on it last week as just another politic tactic for Iowa.  Jacobs claims that Peoples has confirmed Trump's fee, but I've never seen it publicly documented other than her article and Tweets.

Many will be poring through the FEC filings to track disbursements to "Family Leader" this cycle.  And the beat goes on....

This looks like it may be what triggered Trump to go off, an earlier fight with Plaats caused the exposure that Trump is charging for an event he said he didn't charge for. He wasn't pissed really about not getting the quid pro quo endorsement, he was embarrassed at being called out on his lie.

Records Confirm: Trump Lied about $100K Speaking Fee in Iowa

The latest person to find themselves in the crosshairs of Donald Trump’s twitter act is prominent Iowa evangelical Bob Vander Plaats. The specific accusation that Trump leveled against Vander Plaats is that Vander Plaats asked for $100K to arrange for Trump to come speak at an Iowa event that he, generously, was willing to do. Vander Plaats’ response was that it was Trump, in fact, who was paid the massive speaking fee, and that he (Vander Plaats) got nothing.

Peoples Co. paid Trump $100,000 to speak at Land Investment Expo in Iowa in Jan 2015. Was Bob Vander Plaats' idea, but he got no $ in return

Yes, that's what I mentioned above, Jacobs claims that Peoples confirmed, but offers no evidence.

It is buried several links deep getting to the De Moines Register article where they said they did confirm with The People's Co they paid Trump for the appearance.

Yes, that is where Jacobs likely picked it from.  I have been searching for a statement (e.g., press release) from Peoples Co. directly since last week, and thus far have not found one.  (It's not that I don't trust the DMR, I just don't trust the DMR!!   :silly:)

I have no clue who Vander Plaats is either, but this is the standard MO for Trump.  Everything he does is transactional - he wants something. That is how he succeeded in business.  If someone of influence publically endorses him, you will get promised something from Trump in return. To put it bluntly a bribe. You don't support him you get the fist.

Yep, that's how deals are done, isn't it?
