Councilman enjoyed ballot-box victory behind bars

No one in East Chicago thought it might be a good idea to run against the Democrat councilman faced with murder and federal drug charges – so he won behind bars.
Robert “Coop” Battle, Indiana’s councilman from East Chicago 3rd District, won an uncontested re-election bid on Tuesday while sitting inside the Lake County Jail.
Battle was arrested in connection with the Oct. 12 shooting death of Reimundo Camarillo Jr., in East Chicago, the Munster Times reported Tuesday. He
The councilman also faces charges connected to a recent traffic stop where Porter County police found 73 pounds of marijuana and more than $100,000 cash in his car, the newspaper reported.

“The right thing to do at this time would be to resign, step aside so the East Chicago citizens in the third district can be represented properly,” Sheriff Buncich, who also serves as the county’s Democratic chairman, said Tuesday.
Battle’s attorney, John Cantrell, stressed that his client is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
“If he is acquitted, he’ll keep his job,” Cantrell said.
The councilman is seeking bail. A hearing is set for Nov. 17.
