McConnell’s “Leadership” May Cost Republicans the SenateA far cry from the popular establishment meme that principled conservatives are damaging the GOP’s credibility, recent evidence suggests if there is a cancer within the ranks it is spreading from the party’s epicenter.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has become an albatross around the necks of his Republican colleagues, safeguarding his own career at the expense of those around him and the electoral viability of the party at large. He has demonstrated a Machiavellian capacity for self-interest and has long since bargained away principle for power. And quite finally, it is looking like the GOP is on track to pay the price of his solipsism.
For starters, we know his abysmal voting record isn’t gaining any favors with the grassroots. His Conservative Review Liberty Score has dropped a full letter grade in this Congress alone, placing him well below failing at 50% (F). He has wavered, conceded or actively helped the opposition on every major policy confrontation of recent years. And despite campaigning in 2014 on promises that the conservative political climate solicited from him, he could not renege quickly enough once the election was over—hence, another round of concessions on Planned Parenthood, executive amnesty and Obamacare.
Under McConnell’s leadership, senators either jump in front of the freight trains as he commands, or they are coerced into oblivion...
...In a national election year when outsiders are gaining every advantage and voters are rejecting the status quo authority of the elites, it can come as no surprise that some 72 percent of the GOP electorate is dissatisfied with Boehner and McConnell both. No longer are McConnell’s antics simply a stain on conservative principles; now he is actively driving down voter confidence and imperiling the Republican Senate Majority....
