Carson says immigrants 'don't get to change who we are'

SPRING ARBOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Wednesday he welcomes immigrants to America, but they cannot alter "who we are."

The retired neurosurgeon, speaking at a Christian college in his native Michigan, said he wants to preserve the U.S. as "Judeo-Christian." He has blamed political correctness for the fallout over his recent statement against electing a Muslim president, which he later clarified by saying he would be open to a moderate Muslim who denounces radical Islam.

"I have no interest in being like everybody else and giving away all of our values and principles for the sake of political correctness," Carson told a crowd at Spring Arbor University near Jackson, about 75 miles west of Detroit, where he grew up and launched his campaign in May. "There is such a thing as an American dream and the American way. Anybody is welcome to come to America, but they don't get to change who we are."

Carson has been among the leading GOP contenders in recent polls.

In his 30-minute speech, he told of rising from poverty with the help of his single mother. He accused Democrats of dividing Americans, calling the "war on women" a "phony thing" and "all hype." He said his life was "shaped and made successful by women."

The Detroit area has one of the largest Middle Eastern populations in the country, with Arab-Muslims representing the largest ethnic group of Muslims in the area.

Carson pointed to nations where women are not allowed to drive, their court testimony is worth less than men and they are treated like "chattel."

"We do not want to import that type of ideology into America," he said to sustained applause.

In a question-and-answer session with the crowd, Carson said he would revamp the Department of Veterans Affairs so veterans attend its hospitals for specialty care — brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, limb replacement and research — but not necessarily routine services, so chronic delays would be avoided. He decried targeted violence against police, saying every profession has some "inappropriate" actors but law enforcement still deserves respect.

"If a police officer stops you," Carson said, "don't give him a bunch of lip."

Immigrants don't get to change us?

Care to explain why the paddy-wagon is called a paddy-wagon, then?  Or why pizza is a very popular food?  Or why some people can be a putz or a schmuck?

Hint: these weren't from Anglo-Saxon colonists...

I don't think Carson was referring to changes in colloquialisms --- because here's what he said:

If people want to come here and join the American culture; hop aboard. You want to come here and become hyphenated, live in an enclave, institute sharia or live under anything other than the American legal system, I'm not gonna welcome you. Simple as that.

I came here from Sicily and I'm not an Italian-American. I'm an American. Period.

I think you misunderstand what it is to be an American.  It's possible to appropriate words and still be an American.

Yeah...as western civilization crumbles under the onslaught of the third world, we're referring to pizza and Jewish slang insults in the language.  As if anyone anywhere eats Anglo-Saxon cuisine.

I think you misunderstand what it is to be an American.  It's possible to appropriate words and still be an American.

You didn't watch the video, did you?

A paddy-wagon didn't exist until the Irish came.  Those immigrants forced us to change our policing, creating wagons to haul off Irish, to the point the wagons were nicknamed 'paddy' wagons.

So Irish immigrants changed American policing practices.

Prior to Italians immigrants coming to America, no one ate pizza.  It wasn't an 'American' food.  Then the Italians came.  Now we do.  Italian immigrants changed American cuisine.

The video at the link describes so many more examples of how immigrants changed America.  We don't notice it for we were born into the already changed culture.

Hell, when I was growing up, tacos and burritos and salsa were *NOT* American foods.  Now, salsa is America's #1 selling sauce... and Taco Bell is an extremely popular fast food chain.  So immigrants have, just in my lifetime, already changed America.

So Carson stating that immigrants 'don't get to change who we are' is patently false.

They have in the past, they currently *ARE*, and as long as immigration into America exists... they will in the future.

Since you are so sure of yourself, refute it.

You can't.  Which makes you a poor man, casting insults to simply make yourself feel good.

You deserve no respect.

So you're the arbiter of who gets to cast insults?  There have been plenty lobbed ac's way - I don't see you lecturing those people.

He, and many of the rest of us, have an absolute right to feel that way.  Better to ignore, than to waste time trying to convince someone that will never be convinced.  I happen to believe you are wrong much of the time - so, are you going to insult me too?

Oh, did that touch a nerve?  Couple this with your previous reply:

It's amazing that you'd respond as such, but deny a similar response from myself.

AC's insults have no place here... and I, just like your own actions show, will respond in kind.

Thanks, alice. Calling someone wrong isn't an insult. It's a point of opposition.

I know where people stand, I can hear the condescension in their voice and I refuse to engage with someone that has that attitude. Occeander's a special case. He's an old friend of many political clashes, and we just make allowances for each other. I think?

It's hard in these political battles to avoid the personal. And sometimes we all lose our composure. But, heck, look at my avatar. At most, you might get a scratch!

I've been meaning to say something about your avatar - it is not showing up for me.  Just the little blue box of "No Can See".  Is it just me that can't see it?  I'm missing the beautiful white cat with the electric eyes.

My smiley page hasn't worked since the release of iOS 9. I miss them.

I'm not sure about the avatars. I don't see them using iPad. But, I always thought that was because of the theme I chose at TBR.
