We Can’t Handle Ebola – Only 11 Hospital Beds in All of U.S. Ebola Certified
Posted on 15 October, 2014 by Rick Wells
Most Americans have never had a reason to think about or to investigate the number of hospitals or the number of hospital beds in the United States which are capable of handling an outbreak of a disease such as Ebola.
The information regarding America’s ability to deal with such an emergency is not good. We effectively have no ability to fend off this disease. The American medical system, when it comes to fighting Ebola, is completely lacking in the facilities, expertise and preparation to deal with what we are now facing.
Anderson Cooper and Drew Griffin took an inventory of our certified facilities and report their grim discoveries. At a time when we have 4,000 of our military in or headed to Africa to build 17 facilities to expand by 1,700 the number of Ebola certified hospital beds in Africa, the United States has ourselves only 11 beds for our entire nation.
Griffin reports that there are four facilities across the country with Ebola-certified ratings. Three of them, in Missoula, MT, Bethesda, MD, and Atlanta, GA have three beds each. Another in Omaha NE has 2 beds, for a total of eleven. That number is already insufficient and this outbreak is just getting started.
Other hospitals have the facilities which could accommodate Ebola patients but lack the expertise and as Griffin demonstrates, the expertise is very difficult at this point to come by.
The CDC is in a crisis mode of their own, obviously more unprepared than the hospitals for this epidemic and now scrambling to deal with it.
