At a press conference in California, President Obama declartively said, "When it comes to telephone calls, nobody is listening to your telephone calls. That's not what this program is about."

If nobody is listening to the phone calls, then why are they being collected?

Because machines are listening to the calls to identify patterns and, when a selected-for pattern occurs, then a live person does listen to those phone calls.  Of course, the machines do not discriminate between Americans, non-Americans, domestic calls, foreign calls, terrorists, or tea party activists.  But people do.
