Kinder Morgan said Friday it started commercial service of its new Elba Island liquefied natural gas export plant in Georgia after a string of delays.

The Houston pipeline company started up the first of 10 liquefaction units, which chill natural gas to a liquid. Kinder Morgan had planned to commence commercial service sooner, but the $2 billion project was hit by delays, including a recent evacuation as Hurricane Dorian made its way up the Georgia coast.

"This is a great milestone that was achieved with an exemplary safety record," said Kinder Morgan Natural Gas President Norman Holmes. "It is also an important step for the United States as the country becomes a key energy exporter."...
