The Leader of Russian mercenary group Wagner said he has launched an armed attempt to topple the country's military leadership in Moscow.
The head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner vowed Saturday to take all necessary steps to topple the country's military leadership in Moscow, saying his forces would "destroy everything" in their way.
"We are going onwards and we will go to the end," Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a new audio message after vowing to sideline Russia's military leadership.
Yevgeny Prigozhin said his forces had entered the southern Russian region of Rostov but did not provide any proof and AFP could not independently verify his claims.
"We will destroy everything that stands in our way," he added.

Russian mercenary chief says his forces are rebelling, some left Ukraine and entered Russia city

The owner of the Wagner private military contractor made his most direct challenge to the Kremlin yet on Friday, calling for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defense minister. The security services reacted immediately by calling for the arrest of Yevgeny Prigozhin.
In a sign of how seriously the Kremlin was taking the threat, security was heightened in Moscow and in Rostov-on-Don, which is home to the Russian military headquarters for the southern region and also oversees the fighting in Ukraine.
While the outcome of the confrontation was still unclear, it appeared likely to further hinder Moscow’s war effort as Kyiv’s forces were probing Russian defenses in the initial stages of a counteroffensive.
Prigozhin claimed early Saturday that his forces had crossed into Russia from Ukraine and had reached Rostov, saying they faced no resistance from young conscripts at checkpoints and that his forces “aren’t fighting against children.”

Prigozhin claimed early Saturday that his forces had crossed into Russia from Ukraine and had reached Rostov, saying they faced no resistance from young conscripts at checkpoints and that his forces “aren’t fighting against children.”
“But we will destroy anyone who stands in our way,” he said in one of a series of angry video and audio recordings posted on social media beginning late Friday. “We are moving forward and will go until the end.”
He claimed that the chief of the General Staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, scrambled warplanes to strike Wagner’s convoys, which were driving alongside ordinary vehicles. Prigozhin also said his forces shot down a Russian military helicopter that fired on a civilian convoy, but there was no independent confirmation.
And despite Prigozhin’s statements that Wagner convoys had entered Rostov-on-Don, there was no confirmation of that yet on Russian social networks. Videos showed heavy trucks blocking highways leading to the city, long convoys of National Guard trucks were seen on a road outside Rostov-on-Don and armored vehicles were roaming the streets.
Prigozhin said Wagner field camps in Ukraine were struck by rockets, helicopter gunships and artillery fire on orders from Gerasimov following a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, at which they decided to destroy Wagner.
The Wagner forces have played a crucial role in Russia’s war in Ukraine, succeeding in taking the city where the bloodiest and longest battles have taken place, Bakhmut. But Prigozhin has increasingly criticized Russia’s military brass, accusing it of incompetence and of starving his troops of weapons and ammunition.

Putin in crisis: Wagner chief Prigozhin declares war on Russian military leadership, says ‘we will destroy everything’

Russia’s FSB security service opens criminal case against mercenary boss, as he vows to steamroll over anyone who gets in his way.
Vladimir Putin is facing a major military crisis after Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin declared war on Moscow’s own defense ministry, claiming Kremlin officials had killed thousands of his soldiers.
In a statement issued Friday night, the FSB security agency said it had “legally and reasonably begun criminal proceedings” against the Wagner Group warlord “for the organization of armed insurrection.”
Prigozhin, meanwhile, claimed he had pulled his troops back from Ukraine and into Russia’s Rostov, and vowed: “If anyone gets in our way, we will destroy everything!”
POLITICO could not verify the claim that Wagner troops had entered Rostov and Prigozhin did not present evidence of the massive troop movements he claimed were underway.
The feud between Prigozhin and Russia’s ministry of defense has been building for months but now appears to have boiled over.

The President Versus The Pastry Chef: Putin Calls Wagner Group Rebellion “A Knife In The Back Of Russian People”
By Caroline Frost
June 24, 2023 4:20am President Vladimir Putin has made a public address to the Russian people, following moves by the mercenary Wagner group to seize and occupy a Russian military headquarters in the town of Rostov-on-Don, on the country’s southern border with Ukraine.
The Wagner group is led by Yevgeny Prigozhin – a former associate of Putin whose one-time catering contracts with the Kremlin has earned him the description of “pastry chef.” He has called for rebellion against the Russian military machine, but denied he is attempting to orchestrate a political coup.
In Putin’s address, he called the group’s actions “a betrayal – a knife in the back of our people.” ...
An intelligence update from the UK Ministry of Defence called this “the most significant challenge to the Russian state in recent times” and described the feud as escalating into a military confrontation. ...

Russia coup: Here’s what to know about the Wagner rebellion against the Russian military
Cami Mondeaux
The Russian military was thrown into disarray after the leader of a private mercenary group rebelled against the Kremlin on Friday, marking the greatest challenge to President Vladimir Putin’s leadership in over two decades.
Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin led his troops out of Ukraine and into a key city south of Moscow, dealing a blow to Russian military efforts and raising the stakes of civil war amid the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Putin responded to the move on Friday, calling the uprising "a stab in the back.”
Here’s what we know so far about the uprising:
Why did Wagner mercenaries revolt?
The revolt comes after Prigozhin accused the Russian military of attacking his Wagner military forces on Friday, vowing to retaliate against the Kremlin. The Wagner leader accused the Russian military of killing a “huge amount” of his men, warning he would “destroy” any resistance to their group.
“There are 25,000 of us, and we are going to find out why there is such chaos in the country,” Prigozhin said.
The group of mercenaries then marched to Rostov-on-Don, with Prigozhin releasing a video saying they would blockade the area until Russia’s top military generals came to meet with them.

Russia coup latest: Putin calls Wagner Group's armed rebellion 'treason,' vows to punish
By AP StaffPublished June 24, 2023 8:37AMRussia-UkraineAssociated Press
President Vladimir Putin vowed Saturday to punish the organizers of an armed rebellion in Russia after mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin led his troops out of Ukraine and into a key southern city.
Putin denounced the uprising as "a stab in the back." It was the biggest threat to his leadership in over two decades in power.
The private army led by Prigozhin appeared to control the military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, a city 660 miles (over 1,000 kilometers) south of Moscow that runs Russian offensive operations in Ukraine, Britain’s Ministry of Defense said.
As the fast-moving events unfolded in Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow is suffering "full-scale weakness" and that Kyiv was protecting Europe from "the spread of Russian evil and chaos."

This is the kind of event where Twitter shines brightly. Lots of interesting information coming out that can be accessed over there. At this point, it is unclear whether this is a plus or a minus for the west. Some reports say Wagner is a de facto Nazi, others say he wants to settle with Ukraine.
The instability of nuclear weapons control is certainly the most alarming aspect of this. If the coup succeeds without a nuke being used, then it is going to raise alarm bells with every regime that thinks having nukes makes them safe. That might be a good thing.
On the other hand.... well, that is unthinkable.

The revolt comes after Prigozhin accused the Russian military of attacking his Wagner military forces on Friday, vowing to retaliate against the Kremlin. The Wagner leader accused the Russian military of killing a “huge amount” of his men, warning he would “destroy” any resistance to their group.
As a video commentator said in his recent video, there are three basic possibilities here:
1. Russian forces really did attack Wagner forces, and Prigozhin decided that enough is enough;
2. Prigozhin finally reached a breaking point in the months-long tensions and made up the attack as a fake pretext for turning on the Russian military;
3. A notoriously "reliable" Russian missile accidentally hit Wagner forces and Prigozhin decided it was intentional.

Virtually the entire active Russian army is currently tied down in Ukraine.
Not literally, of course, but those providing security in areas well away from the front lines aren't the brightest and best, and their "leaders" are probably of similar quality.

Putin responded by calling his actions a 'betrayal' of Russia as he appealed for soldiers to put their weapons
Prigozhin made the move in fury at what he claimed was Moscow's attack on his men, and said he intends to march to Moscow to take on defense chiefs

Moscow is preparing for war and battening down the hatches as soldiers build outposts and military vehicles flood the streets ahead of the expected arrival of Russia's Wagner militia forces.
Wagner chief Yevgney Prigozhin initiated a military coup against Putin overnight, which has seen the group take key cities and threaten the President, who called them 'traitors'.
Putin addressed the Russian people on Saturday, warning that the military leader had 'stabbed him in the back', as Moscow prepares to enter into lockdown, with troops digging in in preparation to defend the city.
Prigozhin and his feared 25,000-strong Wagner militia took control of the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, saying they are 'ready to die' for their 'march of justice', and have been heading north in a hundreds-strong convoy of armoured vehicles.
The unit passed through the halfway city of Voronezh and have reached as far north as Yelets as they advance on Moscow, seeing negligible resistance.
A message posted on the Wagner Telegram channel on Saturday said: 'Putin made the wrong choice. All the worse for him. Soon we will have a new president.'

Voronezh is about half way from Rostov to Moscow, and along a major highway. Yelets is about 50 miles north of Voronezh, and about 170-200 miles from Moscow. Whether the Wagnerites are being allowed to pass or there simply are no Russian forces in their path, they are advancing swiftly, so far.

This uprising diverts and distracts Russia from Ukraine war
The crisis is Russia is likely to deplete Russian forces on the frontlines in Ukraine.
The Wagner Group was one of only two big, effective fighting forces on the Russian side, BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said on an emergency episode of Ukrainecast.
"The only significant military victory that Russia has achieved - and even that is a qualified one - is the taking of Bakhmut... and that was the Wagner group. They're off the battlefield now," he said.
And Russia will need to divert resources from Ukraine if it wants to halt the rebellion, the BBC's Gabriel Gatehouse said.
"The rest of the Russian military will now be in disarray, trying to figure out how to counter this domestic threat... rather than how to counter the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
"So one can only imagine that this will be good for the Ukrainian side."

Russia coup: What is Wagner group and who is Yevgeny Prigozhin, once dubbed Putin's chef
by Associated Press
June 24, 2023 08:19 AM
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the private military contractor Wagner called Friday for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia's defense minister.
Russian security services reacted immediately by opening a criminal investigation into him.
He has previously bashed the country's military leadership for failures in the war in Ukraine, and is known for his long-running feud with the Defense Ministry.
A look at the 62-year-old Prigozhin and Wagner's role in the war:
WHAT DID PRIGOZHIN SAY?
Prigozhin posted a series of angry video and audio recordings in which he accused Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu of ordering a rocket strike Friday on Wagner's field camps in Ukraine, where his troops are fighting on behalf of Russia.
Prigozhin said his troops would now punish Shoigu in an armed rebellion and urged the army not to offer resistance.
"This is not a military coup, but a march of justice," Prigozhin declared.
The Defense Ministry denied carrying out the rocket attack.
The National Anti-Terrorism Committee, which is part of the Federal Security Services, or FSB, said he would be investigated on charges of calling for an armed rebellion.
The FSB urged Wagner's contract soldiers to arrest Prigozhin and refuse to follow his "criminal and treacherous orders." It called his statements a "stab in the back to Russian troops" and said they amounted to fomenting an armed conflict in Russia.
Riot police and the National Guard have been scrambled to tighten security at key facilities in Moscow, including government agencies and transport infrastructure, Tass reported.
WHAT'S PRIGOZHIN'S BACKGROUND?

Wagner Group: What to know about Russian mercenary group in Ukraine
Yevgeniy Prigozhin claimed credit for founding Wagner Group in 2014 during the Crimea conflict
After a report indicated the Russian-backed Wagner Group deployed more than 400 mercenaries to Kyiv with the mission of assassinating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the private military company is receiving renewed attention from its past atrocities carried out at the behest of the Kremlin.
Russian businessman and Putin’s close ally, Yevgeniy Prigozhin, has claimed credit for founding and running the Wagner group since its inception in 2014. The Wagner Group articipated in the Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and has been considered a proxy group of the Russian state abroad, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
The group rose to prominence during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, deploying around 50,000 personnel to the front over the fifteen months of conflict, including 10,000 contractors and 40,000 convicts. Russian President Vladimir Putin increasingly relied on Wagner for results in Ukraine as the Russian military's own efforts produced minimal results and the conflict dragged on far beyond the initial projected timeline.
The Times of London reported early in the conflict that Wagner headed up an alleged mission to decapitate Zelenskyy and his government, and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko issued a 36-hour nightly curfew over the weekend, warning that any residents who go outside could be mistaken for enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups.

I would strongly caution people against celebrating what is happening in Russia. There have been fewer harsher critics of Putin's invasion but chaos is very rarely a good thing.
Prigozhin is not the only one with a private army in Russia. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has a large force under his command who have 0 loyalty to Russia or Putin. They hate Wagner but if Putin has to be rescued by them, why not take him out as well as take over the country?
Will the national guard fight for Putin? We don't have answers to any of these questions, and an armed mutiny in a nuclear nation is a big deal.
-
There are no "good guys" among Putin, Prigozhin, Kadyrov, or the rest of Russia's half dozen or dozen warlords. The best the rest of the world can hope for is that no one does anything stupid with nuclear weapons, and Russian military power is attrited to 3rd or 4th class status.
-
Prigozhin described as traitors "people who fly on their business jets to the so-called neutral countries to avoid participating in today's problems".[38] He criticized the elite for enjoying "public, luxurious, carefree life" during the war. In contrast, to "survive as a nation", Prigozhin claimed that Russia should prepare for a "difficult war": introduce martial law, announce new waves of mobilization, as well as "get everyone we can producing ammunition" and "close borders like North Korea". However, according to Prigozhin, part of the elite does not care about their homeland and therefore would not sacrifice their comfortable lives for their country.[36]
Prigozhin attacked Russian oligarchs, who he accused of destroying the Soviet Union and taking control over Russia's wealth, while not caring about fighting for Russia's interests. According to Prigozhin, during the war "oligarchs try to steal everything, which belongs to the people".[39]

The Wagner Group militia is reversing course from Moscow in order to “avoid bloodshed” amid news of a possible deal with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said in an audio message Saturday evening.
“We [are] turning our columns around and going back in the other direction toward our field camps, in accordance with the plan,” CNN reported that Prigozhin said in the recording, which was shared on his Telegram channel.

Prigozhin said the decision was made in order to avoid bloodshed, but did not mention Lukashenko’s claim that the militia had agreed to enter negotiations with the Kremlin.
"Prigozhin accepted Lukashenko's proposal to stop the movement of Wagner in Russian territory and on further steps to de-escalate tension," Rossiya 24 said, citing Lukashenko's press service.

From what I know of Wagner, he would be a nightmare worse than Putin.

It's interesting to note that the CIA can still coup d'état in other Countries, besides our own.
-
Did Wagner expect more Russian troops to join them and that didn't pan out?
Is this going to fade out or is Wagner switching tactics to a gorilla war and no longer an out in the open confrontation among civilians?
Somebodies blood is going to be spilled no matter what happens at this point. They can't coexist. Prigozhin must have had a detailed plan with a goal. Having a war in Moscow doesn't seem like a good endgame in itself.
-
I think we should be scouring ancient history for appropriate analogies to guide out thinking on this: this is the Legions marching on (the Third) Rome, so looking at instances of the Legions marching on Rome (or later Constantinople) is probably more helpful in thinking about this than things from 20th century history that seem to be all most folks (esp. in our foreign policy establishment) think of.
I think if the Emperor fled the capital when the Legion was approaching, that typically boded ill for the continuation of the reign.

It is possible that they expected Russian regulars and/or "the people" to join with them, and decided to back off when they didn't get the response they wanted. I think from the Wagner standpoint it fades away for now.
However, I think this will be very bad for Putin. They fact that Wagner rebelled at all makes Putin look weak, and there are other forces in Russia that will take note of that and may be tempted now to take action.

"Hell, I’d rather have Putin than Biden."
@Maj. Bill Martin
Was that supposed to be some sort of cheap shot?

I'm a bit puzzled. From where Wagner Group orcs had been fighting in Bakhmut, Rostov-on-Don and Moscow are in opposite directions. Did the Wagner Group orcs split into two different bands?
Wagner group was withdrawn from Bakhmut and Russian Regulars moved in a few weeks ago.

Wagner Group Chief Yevgeny Prigozhin will move to Belarus in deal brokered by Lukashenko
Wagner Group Chief Yevgeny Prigozhin will move to Belarus in a deal brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The Kremlin confirmed the deal, according to the report, which ends the Wagner Group's "march for justice" towards Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Lukashenko offered to mediate with the approval of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the Belarusian president has known Prigozhin personally for nearly 20 years.

Putin humiliated by Wagner coup with '39 pilots and crew' lost in worst day for air force
Express by Will Stewart, Liam Ryder 6/25/2023
The Russian president faced pressure after losing a number of aircraft to the mercenary group, who remain a threat to Putin's regime
The scale of Vladimir Putin’s humiliation in stopping the dramatic coup bid became clear today, after his substantial losses were revealed. The dictator suffered his worst daily air force losses since invading Ukraine as rebel Wagner fighters repeatedly hit his strike helicopters and a high-flying military plane suspected to be carrying a top general. These were Russians killing Russians.
Putin is also facing the humbling expectation to replace his top two war commanders - close ally defence minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of the army staff general Valery Gerasmivov - or face a new insurrection.
Out of jail, and free to run his large mercenary army, he still poses an acute threat to the 70-year-old Russian president.
It became clear today that he had suffered grievous losses as he sought to halt the Wagner “march of justice” against his corrupt regime towards Moscow.
The Russians are today seeking to cover up the losses of up to 39 pilots and crew in a few hours. They included some of Russia’s leading air force crew members with one account saying 20-plus combat pilots were killed.
Putin lost six helicopters - including three Mi-8 MTPRs specialising in electronic warfare - as well as a sophisticated Il-22 plane used to conduct battle plans at high altitudes, it is now believed.
The Ilyushin-22 appears to have been shot down by a Pantsir missile system secretly supplied to Wagner by Russia’s own forces.

That was a really strange 24 hours...
And what about all the Russian police, troops and leaders that didn't resist Wagner has it marched through Russia? And the people taking selfies with them? What are their fates?
I'd guess people are disappearing all over the place about now.
-
So what is the endgame???
Something is going on.

Wait, are they saying Wagner shot down those helicopters?

They were already unopposed. Putin could have redeployed Wagner to Belarus without all the drama.
-
Wait, are they saying Wagner shot down those helicopters?
Yes. It was all reported live that night including pictures of at least one burning on the ground that was clearly an attack helicopter. A military twin engine airplane was also shot down with video of it going down.
I'll add - a few of Wagner's vehicles were attacked and destroyed on the freeway into the first Russian city where the military headquarters are. There were pictures of the burning trucks. Wagner took out what attacked them.

There is zero connection between this story and that photo.

Just a wayward thought that I had. Since the Wagner Group are mercenaries with no allegiance to any country, couldn't money have entered into the equation? Maybe some lower level commander/s got a pot load of cash to turn around and oust the leader (if that is indeed the case).
