I came in, in December of 2014, but not from TOS. I just happened to wander in here and never left.
-
I got here in 2011 @pookie18 tunes brought me. I lurked for almost a year every morning before realizing this place was HOME after Jim Robinson and his gestapo Mods went on another, of many, rampages.
Nancy and her Mods have treated me fairly throughout my tenure here.
-
First purge, 2014 or so, from TOS where I had been since 1998. TOS taught me how not to Mod.
-
I was on GOPACHY before the schism. That should give you a good idea.
-
I first accessed TBR in 1982 from my Commodore 64.
Back then it was all text.
YOU SEE CURRENT EVENTS FOLDER ...
DO YOU WANT TO ENTER CURRENT EVENTS FOLDER? Y - N
DO YOU WANT TO POST? Y - N
ENTER 256 CHARACTER POST ...
The whole site was like that.

April 2016,
I think I joined TOS in either 2010 or 2011 but my friend had been there a few years earlier

me too... and I found many old friends here.

There was a forum years ago that imploded (true blue freedom) and came here from that in 2011.
-
I came during the Cruz purge. I had been at TOS since the early beginning and signed up in 1998. Today it is a mere tiny shadow of what it used to be. Although I don't post as often as some, I am so happy to be able to read the posts, comments and links!!

I was class of '99 over there, but saw a pattern I didn't like. Not so obvious when I was on the other side of it (even reluctantly), but the Cruz Purge was going to be the end of me anyway.
-
I walked off from TOS in January of 2012 after almost 15 years. Didn't find this place until May of that year. Only went back years later to tell JR what I thought of him and got banned for my trouble. Broke my heart I tell ya!

Joined TOS in 1998 and walked away from it in 2016 over the Cruz crap. Never went back.

I passed through the TBR portal on the first evening it was opened.

I was part of the Santorum purge that same year. If I had known about this site then, I would have stayed here instead of going back for a second purge.

I was also part of the Cruz purge

I joined here in 2016. I had been over at TOS, but in a corner that got a lot of posts but not much attention (I doubt anyone here even knows about The Hobbit Hole threads). I never got purged from TOS, just drifted away over time. In 2016 I was looking for someplace to follow politics leading up to the election, and landed here. I have never been very active in posting, preferring to read the news and people's opinions. But now I feel myself losing interest. I'll probably drift away from here too, but I doubt that I will look for another place to follow politics. There no longer seems to be a point, as the elections are manipulated and controlled, corruption is widespread in the government and business, and the culture itself is lost. I'm going to do my best to keep my head down and live out the few years I have left to my life, while I watch the country I love continue to die.

I don't blame you, I feel the same way.
I am so discouraged and frightened at what is happening to our country..what is worse I don't see too many politicos fighting to save it...and forget about the younger generations they can't even name any of the founding fathers let alone fight to save this country...I am beyond sad.

I don't post as much as I used to. It is not that I am losing interest it is that I too realize that the elections are manipulated, and the indoctrination of our youth has overtaken any chance of us as a nation returning back to the principles upon which this country was founded. Evil has prevailed and that evil is how people have chosen to act. That is why we have so many corrupt members of the DOJ, Congress and Senate -- they made that choice. I don't believe that that corruption is going to dissolve anytime soon.
I remain in this forum because I believe that most in here are good people, with like minds exchanging ideas and venting their frustrations. I find it comforting. When I get too stressed from the reality of what is happening, I head for the park, read, or fiddle in the yard.
We thought about moving to a more remote location to escape what is going on, but we're too darn old and physically just can't make another move.

I'm frightened as well @mystery-ak However, I am thankful for this forum which allows me to at least vent to people who understand. You are correct, the younger generations don't seem to have a clue. Both of my children get it, but younger than that it becomes obvious -- heck most don't even know what an encyclopedia is or how to do a math problem without a calculator! The time will come I believe when technology will be completely shutdown; our grid will be nearly destroyed. They won't know how to function - they won't be able to find a way to fix the problem. They don't have the knowledge. It is beyond sad, not to mention they have know inner feelings of loyalty to this country - they take this country for granted.

I had to look at my Profile, but I wandered in in 2019. Where had I been before ...
Long, long ago, when 56K modems were still moderately cool ... I started with discussion sites in 1997 with Warships1.com (naval history) and Kaleidoscapes. com (homeschooling). Ignoring homeschooling sites and sites I was on briefly (TOS was one of the latter):
From late 1998 to early 2001, I was on Capitol Hill Blue Reader Rant. At the time it was conservative-libertarian, but well after I bailed it went crazy-Prog (almost as crazy as DU). CHB RR is either a cyber-ghost town or shut down. The owner, Doug, said a couple of times in late 2000 or early 2001 that he was going to shut down CHB RR, and after the second such time I bailed.
In 2001 I moved on to United Conservative (later Allied Conservatives), which only lasted a bit more than a year due to the owner falling off the wagon and getting erratic. UC/AC be bye-bye.
From there I spent some time at Gold Talk (now defunct), leaving because the loose moderation let a few trolls dominate.
I spent several years on The Annoyed Army (now defunct), leaving because the owner was too busy with family and life and was unable to maintain the site.
I spent several years on The Republican Operative (now defunct), which got pretty toxic. When a new owner changed to a totally different SW package that was almost as clunky RYO (like TOS'), I gave it a couple of months and left.
Since then I've bounced around among Conservative Cave, Conservative Underground (hacked to Valhalla several years ago), The Politics Forums, and here.
Class ... Class ... Wake up!
-
Lurked at TOS '98-'00, but joined during the attempted steal by Sore-Loserman in late '00.
Was zotted too during the Cruz purges in early 2016, as a set of psycho(socio) path Tumpy-toons hijacked Robinson's site. Since then, I understand the stench lingers. Never will retrun.
-
I looked and I signed up in early 2017 although I lurked quite a while before.
Had to look again...but I signed up at TOS in 2006 so I must have left around 2016 when things quit being fun and interesting. Life is waaay too short.
Even though I was homeless for a while, I'm glad I stumbled in here.

Hi, I just signed up about a month ago. Already posting too much.
I still am on FR. But I needed another place especially if they purge me.
Also, just plain annoying always having EverTrumpers carpet-bombing the news listings with polls about how great Trump is doing, or how horrible DeSantis is.
Never mind their constant 1-liner insults and threats of zotting to multiple posters who even stray 1 bit from Trump perfection beliefs. It got so bad 1 thread after JR deleted a post, reprimanded the guy on the thread, and threatened him with zotting, that I started asking the few non-fans of any ideas. 1 of them sent me here.

Well, we have EverTrumpers here doing the same things.
With the first debate just hours away, things are going to be real interesting. I'll tune it just to see how things go .... I may not watch the whole debate. I'm hoping they debate issues and stay away from petty mudslinging.

The same carpet bombing happens here, as you have no doubt seen, but I will assure you, as one of the most vehement against Tumpy, your opposing opinion will not put you in jeopardy here. Admin here defends speech, without a doubt.

In my 12 years here the only ones I've seen BANNED were people that insulted other Briefers, even after continued warnings~NOT FOR SPEECH.

Hi, I just signed up about a month ago. Already posting too much.
@the OlLine Rebel
No such thing as posting too much. There was a user on this site years ago who posted over 130 posts in a single day.
That is 6 posts per hour in a straight 24 hour day. In a more realistic 18 hour day, that is over 7 posts per hour. So, this guy was posting on average one post every 9 minutes for 18 hours straight with no breaks. Rest easy. You cannot possibly beat the record for "posting too much".
-
@TomSea ?
-
Well, we have EverTrumpers here doing the same things.
Oh no, nothing like FR.
I have several members I know are EverTrumpers who carpet-bomb us every day. 1 guy is averaging 6 threads a day.

There was once a Briefer who refused to excerpt articles, and we had to nuke him. Copyright issues.

I probably have at least four, probably five more decades of this nonsense.
I always had a dream of living to see the American tricentennial, having missed the bicentennial by several years and seeing a few monuments to it in the town where I live. Now I'm not convinced we as an independent nation will make it that far.

Cruz Purge got me, I think Pookie threw me a lifeline to come here, not sure, but may of already registered here but I remember the kind invite by Pookie. I averaged one post per day for years here, but have bumped that up recently to two posts per day.

My profile says that I registered in 2012, during the first waves of FR purges. I've survived both purges and hostile takeovers, both mostly driven by my stubborn determination to irritate others beyond comprehension, and having TBR available to catch a breath is much appreciated.

It still upsets me when I think about what TOS could have been.

Someone invited me here - but I can't remember who.

I have been here since 2016. I don't recall if it was a lifeline, an invite or if he thought I was cruisin for a bruisin on TOS, but @SZonian was who told me about The Briefing Room.
I can't find his message, just my response: Thanks, I will check it out. I have tried to abstain from commenting on FR, because it seems to have become a one thought zone, if one dares to question or disagree with their chosen one you get crucified. I have also noticed a marked drop in posts and posters. Have a great weekend.

I was. I still have the TOS account, to this day. I had left on my own terms in 2014, 18 years to the day after I first signed up. I left because I got the ban for calling Michael O'Bastard a "Wookie." I emailed Jim and he promptly removed the ban, but the damage was done. I had already learned how NOT to Moderate a Forum.
Still having the account proved useful because I did PM a lot of people urging them to come here. I spent a lot of time in the "Refugee thread" welcoming the lifeboats. Some folks stayed, and others didn't. And I have met some really good people on FR, like @Luis Gonzalez.

I liked sinks. A sad state of affairs he just couldn't excerpt articles.
I always liked Sinkspur too... Pretty different from me in places, but very articulate, and always a good debate... Mesaclone that way too, believe it or not... Way different, but a hella good debater. And I miss their input... They kept me sharp.

@sinkspur was a congenital liar (brought it with him from TOS) and that was something I just could not abide. Just me.
-
He said he was a pastor or something right? I never cared about that. I thought he was an intelligent debater.
Portrayed himself as being a Catholic priest for a long time. You are certainly entitled to your opinions @Weird Tolkienish Figure

@Bigun
All I said was he was good at debate, as was Mesaclone...
That is nearly missing here... good debate about Conservative issues, along with opposition players...
And I miss it.

Since May of 2020. I don't post often but i do read Pookie's Toons and other posts daily.

A Priest?
I once explained to sinky that not being able to get laid was NOT the same as being an actual priest.

omg :silly:
Sink was/is a deacon. Our Catholic brethren here will have to explain what that is, because it's different from my denomination.

You've earned your stripes.
Wingnut (or WineNot as he was known for a time) and the long-departed @Chieftain made this forum interesting in the early years.
(Some of you may notice that I didn't register an account here until a few years after it started... as I noted, I was on the predecessor board, but when the schism happened—'09 or '10?—I decided to take a long break from political forums for a while. I eventually accepted myst's longstanding invitation to join.)
Tracey... yeah, I remember that schism, too. Hardcore Trumper, and when a lot of refugees who were not so much... she couldn't really handle it, started saying some things that stood against what she and Myst have said this site was supposed to represent, and disappeared. We still have a few '16 Trumpers here and there—ironically, most of the more hardcore anti-Trumpers have since quit, including some that were cornerstones of this site for a while. I wonder whatever happened to her...

I joined the Mods before Tracy left and I remember the blow up. In fact, naming me as a Mod was one of her last acts. The criteria was I be neither ever- or never-Trump. I was more interested in making sure TBR was neither, I was .more interested in building on trying to create open and free discussion.
I remain so, neither, and I am only interested in keeping TBR free and open to all.

A Deacon? He was a Deacon?
Those are the guys allowed to get laid in the Catholic Church, and he still couldn’t do it?
That’s awful.

Did Tracy go by another name here? I'm wondering if she was the one who invited me.

I don't believe so. The invite was through TOS mail and it would have been her membership name there. I deleted it after receiving it so there was no record of it for anyone there to use.

There are several others here at the time who have since moved on. Can't pull their screen names out at present.

I could be wrong but it seemed like it was two words.

Rapunzel is the one I was trying to pull out @Lando Lincoln I don't think that was her handle at TOS IIRC.

I could be wrong but it seemed like it was two words.
Maybe it was don-o, at the same time as me... I very vaguely remember you and I having a conversation about being done... And it was don-o that brung me.

It wasn't don-o. But thanks anyway.

Dang. Oh, well. How many of the top 10 are still here?
I think we made the Top Ten by a technicality. The first two members were for Admin. #9 was never assigned. So, you are shown as the true 8th member and I am #9 (despite having member #’s 11 and 12). Other members in the Top Ten:
— myst
— R4 TrumpPence
— pookie18
— Peach (miss her)
— JulietteMerry
— zigzag
— treefaller

I've been here long enough to turn you over my knee and tell you to get off my lawn. wink777
EC recruited me in '14. I know how just left one day over a disagreement, just disappeared. Hope he's ok, really liked the guy.
Free Republic deteriorated to the point by then I just couldn't take Jim and crew's punk a** swagger and mouth. I was a Congressional district co-chair and running big state Senate campaigns at the time, part of a big activist network trying to flip Iowa red with conservatives, hanging out in the circles with the big dogs and making things happen. Hardly anyone knew who he was or that FR even existed.
Jim seemed to think he owned Iowa and was going to coronate his candidate here. I reminded him that he was a little pissant punk who's influence here wasn't enough to make toilet paper that I could wipe my butt with.
Oh that made him mad. Went into total blowhard mode and tried to act like he was 10 feet tall. I pretty much chopped him up and spit him out. Got him good, he was still trying to d**k wave even after I was gone. It was hilarious.
If there was ever a guy who needed a punch in the teeth, it was Jim.

A Deacon? He was a Deacon?
No, He wasn't... there was a big stink about it at TOS when it was found out he wasn't what he claimed. I had a bookmark on the story somewhere but time has ate the website. It may be on the archive site.
Found what I could below....

Wow. Like a time machine. I recognize the names but had no idea of all the drama happening in front of my face behind the screen in the background. Was too busy until recent years to get anywhere near deeply involved in any website. Was travelling extensively with only hit and miss access to the internet.
For me, it all about fun ... and admittedly lately, there is a feeling of remote affection, affiliation, and comradery. But no, I never took anything seriously enough to care, or to get mad, or to be upset.
TBR is a mental release for me. Really had no clue about all the histories and politics behind the scenes because, I just don't take it like that. Never have. This post holds lots of surprises for my naïve little brain. I really did not know any of this stuff was going on. Reading this, have to say, I am glad to be on the outside looking in.
-
I'm almost always blissfully unaware of whatever drama is happening behind the scenes wherever I am, including internet forums.

That's right. People called him "phony deacon."

libertybele...
The time is coming, soon, when because of the above, it will not be hard to get rid of our population because they will have become literally worthless and of no value for anything. It will be that rationale that the Gates of the world will use to eliminate the population in the US and most of the world to achieve their global reduction goals.

These doom and gloom predictions have been around forever... they never come true. We'll see I guess.

I remember EC, I think. He suddenly started Insulting members, particularly Cruzers, w/added Venom.

I don't recall him being insulting. Seemed like he was pretty level headed. I could be wrong.

He's a FOG of my Memory @bigheadfred He obviously had serious problems with MGT or he would still be here. I tangled with him a few times.....
:doglick:
I do trust my overlords.

His name is/was Marc. Liked him a lot. Had a great temperament and always added to the conversation.
Indicated he was a helicopter pilot and was involved in rescuing refugees out of a war zone.
Somebody suggested he wasn't who he claimed to be, but it was never challenged among us.
Then...he was gone.
Same with MACVSOG68 (Mike) Good guys!!
-
EC was always kind to me and my best friend. Bought two copies of his book and he was over the moon. We both shared some published stuff of our own with him and he was kind in his criticism
