Terrorists were today holding hostages in an armed siege in a cafe in Sydney where an ISIS flag was held up in the window.
It is unclear how many people are involved in the siege in a Lindt cafe in Martin Place but people could be seen with their hands pressed against the windows.
Martin Place has been shut down and scores of police are surrounding the building after the alarm was raised about 9.45am.

Terrified customers and employees were among those standing with their hands against the window at the Lindt cafe in Sydney
The Seven Network newsroom, which is in a building opposite the cafe, has also been evacuated.
Mia Burns, a news producer for Seven, tweeted: 'Hostages against the glass of Lindt café. Some are shaking and sobbing.'
Other buildings in Martin Place, including the nearby Westpac building, have been cleared.

It was alleged that Omarjan Azari, the 22-year-old Sydney man arrested on terrorism charges in September, was planning a public beheading in Martin Place.
The alleged terror plot, mentioned in a conversation between Australian terrorism recruiter in Syria, Mohammad Ali Barylei and Azari, involved selecting a member of the public at random, beheading them and then covering their body in a flag.
The whole incident was going to be filmed, and then used as propaganda for the ISIS cause.
Federal prosecutors said the alleged terror plot was ‘clearly designed to shock, horror and terrify the community’

ABC reporter Ash Raper has told 702 ABC Sydney:
"We've just been moved out of the way because there's another lot of policemen moved in.
"There's been about a dozen heavily armed police down the side of the cafe for almost an hour ... obviously assessing the situation ... they've just had more backup come in.
"They keep moving the public further and further away behind police tape."

Lebanase Muslim Association president Samier Dandan says Australian Muslim leaders are meeting online now, to see if the community can help.
Mr Dandan says it is not known who is behind the seige and whether there are any links to the Australian Muslim community.
"But regardless we have a hostage situation whether he is someone who belongs to the Australian Muslim community or not we are still waiting for information to be provided by police and based on that if there's something the Muslim community can do or assist we are there."

NSW Police website is choked with traffic. Here is their latest update.
There is a police operation underway at Martin Place. Police and emergency services have responded and a number of streets around the area have been closed. The Martin Place train station is also shut.
Police are dealing with an armed incident and specialist officers are attempting to make contact those inside a café.
Some nearby offices have been evacuated as a precaution. Anyone else in the area encompassing Hunter, George, Elizabeth and Macquarie streets bordering Martin Place is directed to remain indoors and away from open windows. Anyone in the vicinity but outside that area is free to leave their buildings.
Police urge members of the public to remain calm and note that an appropriate police presence is in place.
Police urge the media to be responsible in their reporting. Speculation can cause unnecessary alarm. We will attempt to keep you updated and Police will release more information when it has been confirmed.by Luke Royes 7:09 PM

An unknown number of people are trapped in the building above the cafe where the hostages are being held. Police are evacuating those above the cafe - including a baby - by ladder.
ABC Local Radio reporter John Donigan says: "Police search and rescue are evacuating people out windows and down ladders in the building that the hostages are being held in. So on the Elizabeth Street side of it people are being evacuated out windows and down ladders."

A Lindt Australia executive said there were about 10 staff working at a cafe in Sydney where hostages are being held, Sky Business reported on Monday, and possibly as many as 30 customers.

ABC reporter Peter Lloyd has spoken to The World Today program from the scene in central Sydney.
"I'm standing in Chifley Square, as you say, the heart of Sydney. The RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) is just a short walk away; Parliament House, the Governor Macquarie Towers where the Premier and Ministers work from, law firms; there's a lot of high-end retailers for the well-heeled.
"All this money, power and influence in the centre of Sydney has now been completely shut down. The crowd's are being pushed back; I'm standing, as I said, in Chifley and I'm on the very edge of the police perimeter that's been set up by the riot squad.
"There's a wall of blue at every street around the precinct and the perimeter of the cafe. Behind that is a series of banks of cameras and live AV trucks, and even 12-13 metres behind that, curious onlookers who are, at this point, being told by the police they can stay, but they are being cautioned that this is an operation that's unfolding; the threat assessment is being made minute-by-minute.
"There's been unconfirmed reports of sightings of bombs and other devices around the city. Nothing's been confirmed but the police are going around looking at drainage pipes, drainage holes.
"The streetscape is basically under complete suspicion as police try and get an assessment of whether this is just that cafe or is there something else going on here."
"Inside the cafe, we believe there are 13 people and possibly one gunman. I heard reports from other journalists that it's a pistol, but these are unconfirmed reports; we don't know what it is yet, and we don't know who it is and we only know the association to the Islamic State because of the reports about the flag, the jihadist flag being draped in windows.
"And that's the flag that's been appropriated by ISIS. They grabbed it and put it across all of their marketing and advertising as you've seen this year in the Middle East."

I look at those sweet faces being forced to hold that flag up in post #2, and it just tears me up inside. I pray as we wait for the report on the hostage casualties, that it is far lighter than expected.

Contrary to the typical low information "conservative repetition" chants, Orange County California's (female) Sherriff is issuing concealed carry permits, quite easily, so I read and am told. Apparently she has added staff in her department to handle the increased load of applications.
So I'm seriously thinkin on getting me one dem.
